Selling real estate is all about the land and today a wonderful piece of land is becoming public property in my own back yard. The Trust of Public Land annouced today, they have secured all 95 acres of Hyde Farm. Hyde Farm is located in Cobb County near Johnson Ferry Road and Lower Roswell Road and runs on the North side of the Chattahochee River. It is a beatiful piece of land with rolling hills, a farmhouse, and fields. Anytime I have driven by the farm, I have always thought about family, where we come from, and when life was not so hurried.
The farm was one of the last working farms in Atlanta. J. C. Hyde lived and worked the family homestead until his death in 2004. His father, Jesse Hyde, purchased the property in 1920 from the Power's family. Even as East Cobb grew into an Atlanta suburb and neighborhoods surrounded the farm, you would see Mr. Hyde work the farm with is hand plow and his trusty mule, Nell.
In 1992, the Trust for Public Lands started working with Mr. Hyde to preserve the land for future generations. Sixteen years later the dream comes true. The farm will be conveyed to Cobb County and the National Park Service under a joint and cooperative management plan. The property will open to the public in late 2009 hopefully.
Now there will be one more wonderful green space to take my granddaughters when they visit Gran. We can walk in the woods and see nature at its best. I can show them how our family lived several generations back - the farmhouse at Hyde Farm reminds me of places in my family. And hopefully I can teach to appreciate the wonders around them. Green space and history in one place - life is good and now just one more reason to be proud to call East Cobb home.
