How to Make a Great Impression When Applying to Rent an Apartment

Applying for a new apartment can be stressful; after finally finding the right place, you don’t want to miss out. That’s why when applying to a new rental, you want your application to catch the landlord’s attention. Here, property management company, WNY Holdings shares strategies on how to make a great impression when applying to rent an apartment.

When filling out the application, remember that the rental manager most likely has a slew of other applications to go through. Therefore, from the moment you contact the landlord to answering each question on the application, it’s important to pay attention to detail.

Fortunately, it doesn’t take a lot to stand out from all the rest of the applicants. Here are a few helpful tips to help you do just that.

Call Them

Nowadays, everyone seems to do everything online, but while that offers convenience, it lacks human touch.

Calling an apartment manager lets them know you’re serious about your interest in their apartment and gives you a chance to show that you’re a good candidate from the start.

Keep in mind basic phone call etiquette, and speak clearly and politely throughout the entire phone conversation. If they want to call you back, make sure you have a professional-sounding voicemail message.

Show Up to the Showing on Time

This is the most crucial tip of them all: being on time shows that you’re a responsible, reliable person, and that’s what every apartment manager wants to see in a potential tenant.

While it may not seem like the biggest detail, getting to the showing on time makes a huge difference, and though you might not be able to control the traffic, weather, and other things that could impact getting there in a timely manner, avoid being late. That sends a bad message and can annoy the manager, which might not go over well with them and cost you the apartment.

Be Prepared

Most apartment buildings want to see that you’re stable, which means taking a look at the last few months, if not years, of your job and housing history.

They probably won’t need much, but having your pay stubs, W2s, tax information, and former addresses ready shows you’re on top of things and organized. Rather than having to waste time by rummaging through your house, you’ll be able to present them right away.

Additionally, if you happen to fall in love with an apartment, you want to be financially ready to snatch it up.

Have a Cosigner

Though you might not want to, if you have someone willing to cosign on an apartment for you, doing so will more than likely leave a good impression.

Even if you have a steady income, stable job, and are completely independent, having a cosigner shows you have someone to back you up if you are ever unable to pay your rent. Apartment managers like to see this because they don’t want to have to worry about whether or not someone can make the payment each month.
