Whenever performing search engine optimization for a web page the first thing you want to consider is what things could hurt your search engine rankings. While it's not all that unusual for a website to rank well that has not been optimized for search engines, it is also not unusual for a website to rank poorly that has been extensively optimized. In such cases it is often some overlooked elements of a webpage that are hindering its search engine rankings. Here are few things than may cause a serious decline in your website's search engine performance.

Title tag keywords do not exist within the context of the web page.

The title tag is located at the top of a browser and it is an important element of search engine optimization. The title tag should include keywords and keyword phrases and its length should be limited to about 65 characters.  Its important that the words used in the title tag also exists within the text of the webpage. Failing to include the title tag keywords within the page's text can seriously hurt your search engine rankings. For example if your title tag reads "New homes for sale in Doyles Ohio" be sure that this exact phrase is present in the text of the website. Having similar phrases is not sufficient, the exact phrase should exist at least one.

Keywords in meta tag do no exist within  the context of the webpage.

Meta tag keywords are a less important element of search engine optimization than tite tags, however they can still get you into trouble if they contain keywords that do not exist within the content of the webpage.  Be extra careful if you are using a templated website that autofills the meta keyword tag.  When this is the case, be sure that each keyword is present on the webpage.

Linking to bad sites

Linking to a websites with low search engine value can reduce your search engine rankings. Additionally, linking to too many websites can reduce a page's seo ranking.

Keywords within hidden parts of a web page.

The following is an example of a comment in html. <!-- Html comment. --> It's not uncommon for website developers to comment out a portion of a web page that was previously displayed. It can be problematic if any search engine keywords are within html comment tags. Html comments are not visible when viewing a web page. To see html comments you must view the source code of the webpage. To accomplish this on the internet explorer browser go to Page --> View Source. On the Firefox browser go to View --> Page Source. Then perform a search for html comments by entering Ctrl F and entering <!---
