NC Becomes the 45th State to Ease Quarantine Restrictions
Following the announcement last week to extend the Stay-at-Home Order through May 8th, NC residents were told that we were on-track to begin the President’s 3-phased approach to gradually and meticulously lifting the Order’s restrictions.
As we had been doing since the onset of this pandemic, we were watching the data trajectory very closely. We had high hopes that our time quarantined was going to be coming to an end…and soon!
North Carolina is taking the three-phased approach – based on data from testing, tracing and trends - that President Trump suggested to all governors in late April. At this point in time, NC is on the right path and our numbers support a May 8 (5PM) movement into Phase I of the plan to ease the restrictions, which our governor has approved.
At 5PM on Friday, May 8, 2020, North Carolina will move into Phase 1 of the plan. In a nutshell, NC’s Stay-at-Home order will remain in place but, the new executive order increases the number of reasons people are allowed to leave.
While the Stay-at-Home Order remains in place, there are modifications with each of the 3 phases.
Phase 1 removes ‘essential’ and ‘non-essential' titles from businesses and focuses on getting a very large portion of our businesses back to work. The exception to these businesses (those not allowed to return to work or are modified) are as follows:
- BARBERS, SALONS & MASSAGE - Will remain CLOSED
- THEATERS, MUSIC VENUES & BOWLING ALLEYS - Will remain CLOSED
- GYMS - Will remain CLOSED
- WORSHIP SERVICES - Outdoors only
- RETAIL - 50% capacity allowed with social distancing and proper cleaning/disinfecting.
- BARS - Take-out & delivery only
- RESTAURANTS - Take-out & delivery only
*TELEWORKING IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO CONTINUE
**FACE COVERINGS ARE STRONGLY ENCOURAGED.
Other restrictions that are of importance:
- GATHERINGS - 10-person limit
- PLAYGROUNDS - Will remain CLOSED
- STATE PARKS & TRAILS - Opening encouraged
What’s Next?
Phase 2 of the three-phased approach to lift restrictions may not be implemented if:
- infections spike or benchmark trends begin to move in the wrong direction. If this happens, the state may move to a previous phase to protect public health.
Science and data available will be used to make all decisions as well as continued consultation with business and industry leaders. To follow this data, you can visit the COVID-19 North Carolina Dashboard.
More specific questions? Here are the state’s FAQs regarding the implementation of Executive Order #138 to protect public health.
Social distancing, hand hygiene, and other methods to slow the spread of COVID-19 should continue to be practiced.
TIPS TO REMEMBER TO HELP CONTINUE TO STOP THE SPREAD
The 3 w’s:
1. Wear a mask
2. Wash your hands
3. Walk & wait 6-feet apart
