Two green pieces of yarn.   

 

Has someone made a lasting impact early in life that you still cherish and remain grateful for the experience?

 

A 2nd grade teacher comes to mind every time. She noticed that my hair was ratty, needing attention, then held me back one day before leaving school. She carefully brushed out the tangles, putting my hair into two ponytails with green yarn, saying that if I brought back the two strings and made an effort to be early, she'd fix my hair every morning. 

 

Each night, after that, before going to bed, I'd carefully put the two pieces of yarn in the seam of my studies book and take them back the following day so she could do it all over again. She took the time to make me feel special at a point in life where everything around me was chaotic. Those two pieces of yarn were most treasured in my little world.

 

The teacher knew my mother was single, struggling to take care of six small children without much help. School was an escape because we lived in poverty. There, I felt  comfortable because of the learning environment and few knew about our circumstances. School mornings, I'd wake up early, get dressed real quick and race out the door. 

 

Her gesture taught me that kindness can be a very simple, loving act that also comes without ulterior motives. Not sure if she ever knew how much the small show of kindness impacted my little life but every day I'd race to her class early to get my hair done, running full out the entire way! It still brings a smile to this face and warms my heart.

 

Thank you again teacher for going beyond for this little poor girl!
