Our 16 year old called today. She is on a trip to Washington DC. This is one of those Worldstride based trips that aren't affiliated necessarily with her school, but that is where the accessability to it comes from. She called to say that she used the battery up in the camera. It is a rechargable battery but she had taken over 200 pictures at Colonial Williamsburg. This is a kid that thinks that history is boring!
I am so glad that she has the opportunity of a lifetime, to visit our Nation's Capitol, this is something that I have not done yet. It is on my wish list, but my I haven't quite got to it yet. What a great opportunity for young people to go and visit places that are so important to us. We were a little surprised last spring when she came home from school and asked if she could go on this trip. I must admit to a little jealousy at this time, if trips such as this existed when I was in High School, I didn't know about them.
My only hope is that she enjoys herself, and comes away with a greater respect for the leaders that have shaped our history. I hope that she feels the reverence in Arlington and at the Wall, and that she understands the sacrifices that have allowed us the great opportunities that we enjoy here in the United States. Lastly, I hope that she returns safely home with lots of photographs and stories that she will keep throughout her life!
