There’s nothing quite like having a garage door that functions properly and is attractive. The fact that you can pull up in your driveway, hit a button on a remote control, and have a door lift up to offer you a parking space is a convenience that’s entirely underrated for our lives. Garages provide a lot of security for vehicles. Plus, a good garage door will provide a ton of utility for your home and even add a lot of value to it, for appraisals of equity or resale value. Though, as most garage owners know, there are a few intricate moving parts of a garage door, and things can go bad, and you’ll end up needing some repairs or an outright replacement.

This leads many people who have garages to ask a question: What is the timeframe for replacing a garage door? People want to know if there is any set time limit for garage door replacement and Aladdin Garage Doors Like with other items that we deal with, such as water heaters or automobile engines, most assume some recommended timeframe for replacing a door. Well, for garages, it’s a bit more complicated than that.

The Recommended Time Frame

There is a recommended timeframe for replacing your garage door outright, to be clear. Most recommend that the garage door as an entire assembly (tracks, rollers, motor, and the door, etc.) are entirely replaced every twenty years. So, you’re getting a lot of life out of your garage door assemblies, but they’re finite pieces of machinery. It’s important to remember that you are dealing with machinery. Even for as solid as the door may look when closed, it’s an amalgam of moving parts designed to completely fold away up the tracks, so one can imagine the wear and tear it will take over the course of two decades.

But just because the recommended time for complete garage door replacement is twenty years, that in no way means that you will be able to set your calendar to it. The fact is that some assemblies aren’t going to make it nearly that long, due to lack of maintenance, and some can last exceedingly longer than the recommended twenty. It’s a bit of a complex topic, though easy to simplify.

The Truth About Replacement

The plain and simple truth is that the longer your garage door lasts is simply a measure of how you care for it. That’s at least the most important factor, while of course, not the only one. But if you’re in there performing maintenance, tightening the tracks, replacing the rollers, ensuring that your door is balanced, and oiling all of those moving parts, the life of your garage door is going to be indefinite. This doesn’t mean “infinite,” to be sure, but you could get a whole lot longer than twenty years out of a well-maintained garage door assembly.

Your Brand Matters

The brand of garage door you purchase is also going to matter. Nobody out there wants to spend a fortune, but you have to balance out your expectations and your budget. If you don’t want to have to constantly repair your garage door or replace it in a few years, then you cannot simply go and buy the cheapest assembly you find. Garage door assemblies are definitely one of those “get what you pay for” items.

Staving Off Replacement

Then you also have to consider that the maintenance you provide your garage door is really going to be the best weapon at your disposal to extend its life. When you need garage door repair, for instance, going with a company that can do professional work will ensure that your garage door functions like it’s brand new. So when you have issues and need repairs, you should always contact the best professionals for the job.

Garage door assemblies are fairly sturdy and very reliable pieces of machinery. Just always keep in mind that there are quite a few separate working components in your garage door and that these components do have a shelf life. Make sure you do the best to maintain your assembly, and you will get a very long life out of it.
