Daniel Ken was born in Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii to Hyotaro ad Dame back in 1924. He graduated from President William McKinley High School. During the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor he served as a medical volunteer. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943, being promoted to sergeant within his first year of service.
He served in Italy before being transferred to the Vosges Mountains region of France. He was there during the battle to relieve the Lost Battalion. For his actions, he received a battlefield commission to a second lieutenant, that made him the youngest officer in his regiment. during a battle near Liguria, Italy he lost his right arm. By the end of the war he had been promoted to captain before being honorably discharged. He was given the Medal of Honor.
What you may not know about Daniel Ken Inouye is that after the war he was elected United States Senator from Hawaii serving from 1963 until his death in 2012. He was President pro tempore of the United States Senate making him the highest-ranking Asian-American politician in U.S. History.
