How to Get Your Kids to Help Around the House

when kids help around the house, you no longer feel your life is spent cleaning up after them.

So, it's a huge WIN-WIN!

And it sounds rosy. But today, we're addressing a few common problems that arise with kids chores.

Problem #1. Low Expectations

Sometimes we don't expect enough from kids because we don't know what they can do.

Using a chore list and dividing it out by family member makes things more manageable for everyone. This is also a great tip if one parent seems to be doing all the household work. Dividing it out on paper helps everyone see what's to be done, and by whom.

Problem #2. Getting Them DONE

It's not always easy to get kids to DO the chores. Most of us have spent time frustrated, trying to get our kids to just finish the darn thing correctly.

The good news is: this can be fixed by clear and consistent expectations (a chore chart), plus a relevant reward. (Relevant reward could mean screen time, allowance, stickers, or anything that excites your kids).

Note: Chores are just one amazing habit to teach kids, here's a list of more great kids habits.

3 Tips to Make Your Chore System Even Better

Put your chore charts on a clipboard:

Not only does it keep your routine and chore charts organized, but we've found it to be SUPER helpful as a place to put other school papers too. (We hang our clipboards up on the fridge)

Make it re-usable!:

Put your charts in a page protector and dry erase marker so the kids can use them over and over!

Set up for success:

If you have "make breakfast" on your routine chart then make sure your kids know what and how to make foods.

Look through your chart and make sure the actions are age appropriate, you've practiced HOW to do it with the kids, and that supplies are within easy reach.

In Conclusion

I hope these tips help you as much as they have us! In the long-term, teaching your kids to be independent saves LOADS of time and sanity!

My mom used a rewards/point system..if we did this or didn't do that we received rewards points and could redeem them for staying up late or toys or whatever..it was very effective..I did this with my alpha female dog and it seemed to work!!

When we were kids, we also had a reward system: Do it right or we were going to see the woodshed
