On August 16, 2022, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits down 1.3% to 1,674,000 units in July of 2022 from 1,696,000 units in June of 2022, but up 1.1% from 1,655,000 in July of 2021. Single family building permits decreased 4.3% to a rate of 928,000 units in July of 2022, from 970,000 units in June of 2022, and there were 693,000 multifamily building permits issued in July of 2022.
Nationwide housing starts declined 9.6% to 1,446,000 units in July of 2022, from 1,599,000 units in June of 2022 and lower 8.1% from 1,573,000 units in July of 2021. Single family starts fell 10.1% to a rate of 916,000 units in July of 2022 from 1,019,000 in June of 2022, and there were 514,000 multifamily building starts in July of 2022.
Nationwide housing completions increased 1.1% to 1,424,000 units in July of 2022 from 1,409,000 units in June of 2022, and higher 3.5% from 1,376,000 units in July of 2021. Single family completions down 3.6% to a rate of 1,409,000 units in July of 2022, from 1,017,000 units in June of 2022, and there were 412,000 multifamily completions in July of 2022.
