Last week, on the most gorgeous fall day I decided to head out to Sugarloaf Mountain for the first hike of the season. The drive along the winding roads was already beautiful but the view from the top? Spectacular with just a hint of fall. The leaves had just begun to change color. I figured it would be another couple of weeks or so until it all was dressed in autumn.
According to the Fall Foliage Map peak leaf peeping season in this part of the world is just around the corner: the week of October 24th, 2022!
Maryland has no shortage of well-maintained trails, forgotten places, swinging bridges and even waterfalls. There are so many opportunities to forest bathe and admire all the fall foliage. In my amateur-ish hiker opinion, the best spots for a view and leaf peeping besides Sugarloaf are Great Falls and the Billy Goat trails, Black Rock via the AT trail, Cunningham Falls, Kings and Queens Chair, and along the many miles of our Patapsco Valley State Park. I am partial to the latter since it's practically at my doorstep.
Feel free to share a fall hiking picture, or a hidden gem of a trail that should be on my must-see-and-hike list, in the comments!
Coming up, the best time to see fall foliage in 2022! Maryland is about to dress in autumn and it's going to be a spectacular sight.
