How to Dance at an Indian Wedding

For many people, attending an Indian wedding is quite an experience in almost every way. Just trying to keep up with the dancing is something special—and so much fun. For those who want to know more about “How to Dance at an Indian Wedding,” the SAPAN Institute will lead a festive class of Bhangra Bollywood-style dance as part of the Silver Spring Town Center, Inc. Around the World Bazaar from 7-8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31, at the Silver Spring Civic Building.

The Around the World Bazaar will fill the Silver Spring Civic Building with a variety of events from 5-10 p.m. on March 31.

The South Asian Performing Arts Network and Institute (SAPAN Institute) is a nonprofit performing arts company based in Washington, D.C.

All ages and abilities welcome to the free event, but it is suggested to reserve a spot in the program in advance. To do that, send an email to lisa@silverspringtowncenter.com.

This program is being presented in collaboration with Olney Theatre, which is presenting A Nice Indian Boy through April 9.

Roy what an interesting event to attend! I haven't attended any Indian Dances in quite awhile but it is always enjoyable watching them.  I see them on TV quite often on the local news as it's pretty common.  We also have a wonderful Indian Museum (Heard Museum) here in PHX. which is a must see for locals and visitors alike.

These Indians are people from India, not American Indians.

We have a very diverse international population in our area.

The largest numbers of Indian immigrants live in Fairfax County, VA (32,500), Montgomery County, MD (25,000) and Loudoun County, VA (17,700)..

My sister-in-law is East Indian and I love their beautiful dancing and costumes and have enjoyed it for many, many years Roy!

Hi Roy,

My first thought was there must be a large enough population to hold an event like this.  You clarified that point.  It is always good to learn about other cultures.

Roy Kelley - I would definitely be interested! I'll bet the color of garments and the dance is just beautiful!

That event sounds like a real blast!  I learned many years ago, though, there is not teaching me to dance.  😃

Good morning, Roy... I'd be at this festival with bells on my toes... ready to learn how to dance at an Indian wedding. The women's comedy showcase also sounds like it would be fun.

Hmm, I don't want to dance myself but I would certainly enjoy watching others dance.

I have never danced at an Indian wedding.  However, I did dance at a first birthday party for the son of my Indian friend.  There was alcohol involved.

I was invited to watch a maiden practiced 10 years in dance. Now grown going to Cornell Medical School. She did a 2 hour (?) long dance for the audience w/o shoes on. In India, The British tried to ban the tradition claiming the priest was picking the best attractive dancer for personal motivation.  But this is in Silicon Valley with 50 young women danced together.
