Cynthia was working on our 4th of July postcard and decided to include this quote:
"People willing to trade their freedom for temporary security deserve neither and will lose both."

It turns out that this is actually a paraphrase of what Franklin really said, which was "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." The paraphrase is a little more succinct and penetrating, IMO.
And while thinking of quotes in this vein, here's another:
"Liberty is always dangerous, but it is the safest thing we have."

I won't go into who Fosdick was. I didn't know until I googled him myself. I just love the way the Internet, with its instant research power, can make almost anyone look learned!
