What will they think of next?

After hearing about an "internet hunting" bill going in front of the Iowa Legislature, I asked around and couldn't seem to find anyone that knew what it was (well, I had a few people guessing but no one seemed to actually know).  So, I did some research and in the event you may be interested:

Internet Hunting allows a hunter (or rather, web surfer) to go to a website and with their mouse access a remote controlled .22 caliber rifle with a webcam mounted on top of it to kill whatever game is being offered by the website owner.  Their trophy kill would be mounted and shipped to them for display.

Apparently this is an issue that was first recognized in the State of Texas and Iowa will be the 25th State to add the law banning this practice to their books (House File 671).  It is believed to be a pre-emptive move as there are no reports that it is currently being done in the State of Iowa.

So, in the event that anyone asks you, now you know!  Is anyone out there very knowledgeable about this?  Thoughts?  Honestly, what will they (or have they already) think of next???

Heather I'm not sure that you will find anybody that is knowledgeable on Internet hunting as governments across America have done a great job of being preemptive and stopping this type of hunting.  I've been around hunting circles here in Iowa for my entire life.  The case in Texas caused a big stir among sportsmen and women across America that fight every year to keep the sports alive.  There is already incredible opposition to hunting by groups like PETA that would like to see it banned altogether.  Animal rights groups are very active in Iowa and sometimes go as far as buying all of the additional issued doe tags so that hunters can not buy them, thereby "saving" the animals.  To me there is no debate, and by not harvesting the animals you are inviting disease and increased car deer accidents but thats another argument for later.  As far as Internet hunting I think you will find that almost all hunters disagree with it.  I hesitate to say "all" because there may be a few that would agree with it.  I think this is one thing the Hunters and Animal Rights folks could agree on, and in my opinion Internet hunting is downright stupid and dangerous.

Could you imagine setting up a gun and letting someone else on the other end of an internet connection control the trigger?  I spent 17 years as a police officer and I can tell you that I wouldn't.

Sportsmen and Women in American go hunting for the whole experience.  That includes being in mother nature, seeing the sights, smelling the smells and hearing the sounds of the woods.  They do it for the pure enjoyment of the experience and very little of it has to do with killing.  Internet hunting is not about the experience and in my opinion is only about killing.  I think it would be hard for anybody to argue any different.

As far as the future who knows where we are headed.  Every time I think I have a handle on technology I soon realize I'm a step behind and there is something new to learn.  We are travelling at warp speed and what is possible today probably seemed impossible 10 years ago.  When there is money to be made some folks will find a way to take advantage of that.  While the hunting industry may seem insignificant you might take a look at my recent post on hunting in Iowa and how hunting affects the economy.  Iowa has a good reputation for trophy whitetail deer and with that reputation has brought many different types of crime.  With the difficulty to obtain a deer tag in Iowa by non-residents of Iowa it has a tendency to attract those that don't always follow the law.

Thanks for the post- great subject!

Jason:

Thank you for the comments.  I have never been interested in hunting, but was married to an avid hunter and I agree, he is much more interested in the actual sport (I would hope anyway since other than pheasant he doesn't bring much home).  I suppose for the same reason that people play internet poker and/or video golf, I suppose it's easier and cheaper!

I, too, thought it seemed incredibly STUPID as far as risk is concerned.  Who's fault is it if there'a an accident?  I can't imagine there is an insurance company in existence that would take on that type of liablity, but again, I suppose if they weren't pre-emptive and anticipating it, they wouldn't have it excluded.

I'm with you though, I can't keep up.  Say hello if you're ever in eastern Iowa!

Best wishes!

You're right that is I'm sure one of those things nobody thought to exclude from any insurance policy.  I make it to eastern Iowa now and then but usually not that far north but I'll be sure if I get the pleasure of getting that far north to say hi.
