Located between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe, Grass Valley sits in the beautiful Sierra Foothills.  We have a four season climate, with just a dusting of snow in town, many recreational and cultural activities, good restaurants and shopping and award winning schools.  Beautiful Lakes, rivers, mountains with miles of trails for the hiking, biking and horse back riding enthusiast and adjacent to the Tahoe National Forest.

Parks and Places to Visit

Empire Mine State Park with 800 acres, where you can explore the mine yards, the owners cottage with docents dressed in period dress to show you around, beautiful gardens and other buildings.  This is considered the richest mine in California, operating from 1850 to 1956.  The mine produced over 5 million ounces of gold, taken from over 350 miles of underground mine shafts.  Tours of the Park can be booked though 530-273-8522 and is open daily.

Miners Foundry in Nevada City dates back to 1856. The foundry was originally called the Nevada Iron and Brass Foundry and Machine Shop and produced the first Pelton Wheel, in 1879.  There is a self guided tour.  This beautiful historic building is used for many cultural events throughout the year. 530-265-5040.

North Bloomfield - Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park is restored Golf Rush town (once known as Humbug).  This is where hydraulic mining started in 1953.  High pressure water was used to wash away the mountains.  This practice was only allowed for about years because of the distruction caused to the rivers, downstream farmland and flooding in the valley.  The destruction of blasting the mountains away, looks similar to a smaller version of the Grand Canyon.  There are many hiking trails and a beautiful lake for a swim. 530-265-2740

Firehouse Museum  was built in 1961. The firehouse houses items relating to local history. 520-265-5468

North Star Power House and Pelton Wheel Mining Exhibit is displayed in the 1895 stone building.  The park sits along side a creek and has picnic tables.  530-273-4255.

The Grass Valley area is a wonderful place for a visit and even a better place to live.
