When an Agent Becomes A Seller

In my opinion, every real estate agent should, at some point, become a seller.  It is standard procedure for me to go to my sellers and gently but firmly tell them what they can do to help sell their homes, especially if they are downsizing.  Clean up this, repair that, etc., etc.  Sometimes I get a little impatient when items aren't completed in what I consider a timely fashion.

I, myself, have recently become a seller.  Now I have to listen to my own advise.  I am currently getting my mother's home ready to be listed. I ordered a dumpster and am now in the process of "downsizing" my mother.

I never realized how much work it is and all the decisions that have to be made.  Do we keep this? Do we toss that?  I have gain a lot more sympathy for my sellers.  I never realized that it can be quite overwhelming.  When I add in the facts that my sellers have jobs, families and other activities, I realize that I need to be more sensitive to some of the tasks that I have asked them to undertake.

Now don't get me wrong, the cleaning up and tossing out still has to be done.  Now though, I understand if it takes a little longer.

Well don't forget to ask your agent to cut their commission when you are reviewing the offer. (joke)

Cindy, I have been through this with parents also. It is tough, especially when they do not want to downsize because of aging and failing health. They never want others to make decisions for them and do not want in the slightest to give up their independence.

Some sellers are a pleasure to work with. They listen, or even take the initiative to get their houses ready for sale. In my most recent sale, the sellers listened well -- going so far as to clean the house well, have the carpet stretched and put some enamel paint on the refrigerator door. Their home sold pretty quickly. The sellers who will not listen to good suggestions put the sale of their home in jeapordy, or at least how much they might net.

It's very stressful - especially when people are highly critical, show up unannounced, or make an appt and don't show.

Helping your mother is one thing, though, and doing it yourself is actually another. I've both helped a parent and moved myself. Both are hard, but it was far worse when it was MY home.

Someday I will be a seller.  I'm starting to downsize my belongings now since we moved some stuffs to my second home.  But sorting things out and deciding what to part is really hard.  I'm not sure if I'll be ready to market my home once the market improves.  I truly understand the stress the sellers are having when they put their house on the market.

People still think the property will sell, with what they have on the property, on the walls, and I see a whole lot more if they remove it. It's hard to make people understand that decluttering will make it better for all to see what they can do with it. Dream ablut your new home and leave this one behind, although keep the memories alive with pictures.

What are you actualling going to need is the first and last question I'll ask.
