Tent Caterpillars...Nature's Ugly Brushstrokes!!!

By
Title Insurance with Patriot Land Transfer, Inc.

The area of Pennsylvania I live in is prolific with magificent vistas...You can look in any direction and be wowed by some part of God's magnificent creation...

But like life itself, there is an element of imperfection or taint noticeable in just about every 'natural canvas'..."Adam, why did you have to go ahead and eat that fruit...you couldn't have been hungry..."

This year, what taints our area's countryside, are those God forsaken tent caterpillars...you see them everywhere...it's almost as if high fuel prices have a cause and effect relationship with tent caterpillars...both are ugly and reprehensible...and both share center stage right now...

Will tent caterpillars just slowly go away like slowly declining fuel prices...or will nature's demand for them increase their supply?

Whatever the case I hope they go away never to return...and quickly...certainly before the upcoming election...before a winning party has a chance to legislate their protection as an endangered species!!!

Does anyone know what 'good' they do...what redemptive act sustains their existence...and what about all the vegetation they destroy!

And whatever happened to the tent caterpillars 'natural enemy'...isn't there supposed to be some bird, or bat, or owl, or some other much more admirable species that is a 'natural predator' of tent caterpillars...and if so, where the heck have they been...

Their 'natural enemies' seem to have gone the way of the 'no doc' or 'stated income' loan...they're nowhere to be found!

Whatever the case may be, I have had my fill of them and I get rid of them whenever possible...I hope you'll do the same...

Oh, and by the way, please remember to vote this November!

Here's some info. I found on Wikipedia:

"Tent caterpillars exhibit boom or bust population dynamics . . . During outbreaks, the caterpillars can become so abundant that they are capable of completely defoliating tens of thousands of acres of forest. Although these outbreaks do not follow true cycles in the sense that they occur at regular intervals, some particularly prone regions have recorded outbreaks every ten years or so. Caterpillars rarely remain in outbreak numbers for more than two to three years. Factors which bring outbreaks to a close include parasitoids and disease."

Hopefully your outbreak doesn't last 2-3 years!!  Good luck- those pictures were gross!!!

Fran, whatever God put here to eat tent catepillars may have become extinct.  Find out what eats them and bring them into the neighborhood!  And I love the bicycle!

Fran - I don't like them, either.  However, I haven't seen many of them this year.  Maybe all the rain we've been getting has deterred them.  Whatevever the reason, I'm happy...  :)

You know I had noticed these webs in a couple of our trees last year and could not figure out for the life of me what they were. Someone said the tree was diseased. Well, now I know. Is there any good way of getting rid of them?

We live on a couple of acres and have critters all around us, plus the swamp out back. You would think that the hawks or owls (even a gator or two, but don't believe they can climb trees) would take care of these little critters.

Barbara: I don't see them everywhere either...hard to figure out!

Jan: I'm no expert, but I think the best way to get rid of them is by either cutting them out and burning (carefully), or perhaps a high pressure washer can remove them mechanically...I don't own one so I'm not sure!

Thanks,   Fran

My dad and I were talking about these yesterday on our morning walk. They used to be everywhere here when I was a kid, but I haven't seen them in probably 15-20 years. I didn't know where they went and either did he. I guess you figured it out and they moved your way!

TC,

I'm installing a sign, "Go west young caterpillar, go west"...! LOL, Thanks,   Fran

P.S. Now that you mention it, they do seem to have a western flare to them...a kind of tree tumbleweed...!
