Aircraft Carrier USS Carl Vinson Is Not Coming to Hawaii

by: David and Tonya Kucic, Hawaii Real Estate Agents

After more than a year of speculation, the United States Navy announced that the USS Carl Vinson will not be stationed in Hawaii.  The USS Carl Vinson is an aircraft carrier and was being considered for stationing the ship at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Puget Sound or Guam.  The decision has been made to base the ship in San Diego along with the USS Ronald Reagan and the USS Nimitz which are 2 other aircraft carriers.

If the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson would have been stationed in Hawaii, the speculation was that the ships air wing would occupy land at the old Barbers Point Naval Air Station which is also known as Kalealoa while the ship itself would be based out of Pearl Harbor.  Although it would have brought millions of dollars to the local economy, it would have also impacted our already crowded schools, streets and housing situation.  While I always support the growth of all branches of the Armed Forces, I am slightly relieved to know that the ship will be located in the mainland exclusively because of the overpopulation of leeward Oahu without the proper infrastructure being in place.

Since the City of Ewa Beach, Hawaii was left off of the route for the proposed light rail here in Hawaii, it is only appropriate that the growth of Kalaeloa not take place for the foreseeable future.

Ewa Beach will grow naturally and will continue to be a highly desirable place to live for many years to come.

David,

How many carriers are stationed in Hawaii.  Do you think this will have any effect on our readiness or is it just a political decision?

Brian-There are ZERO stationed here in Hawaii.  I dont know the answer to your second question but it sounds political to me.  The hot spot with North Korea and the War on Terror in Iraq, Afghanistan and pose some our biggest threats right now.  If quick reaction is important then Hawaii would be a great choice to base a carrier.  Guam is actually 3,700 miles closer to Korea than Hawaii but it lacks the infrastructure to support the carrier.

There are 12 aircraft carriers.  One is stationed in Japan and the other 11 are in the Continental United States.

Aloha!

That is somewhat disappointing, but expected.  I heard announcements about it not coming a while back.

I was hoping for all the jobs it would have brought to Pearl Harbor.

Randy-That would have been one of the good things.  I am interested to see what the state will do with the land at Kalealoa now.  There is so much potential with that property.  Went to Guy's last night.  Checked out the Kane paintings and got a great explanation of what the paintings were about.  Aloha!
