Bloggers know that an essential part of capturing a readers attention is pictures!

Pictures are a must-have for every blog.  But where should you find your pictures at?

Along with Google Images and Flickr, a great site to find pictures to use for your Blog is PicApp.

PicApp.com

PicApp has a wide selection of Creative (i.e. Stock Photography) and Editorial (i.e. photos of news, sport and entertainment events) Photos that are free and legal to use on your blog.  Registration is not required!

Enjoy searching for the perfect picture!

Edit:  As many people have commented about this I figured I should put it up here:  As with written content you place on your blog, you also need to be careful of photos that you post on your blog.  Flickr, Google Images, and other phtoo sites MAY be used but you first must check to see the photos are NOT copyrighted and ensure they can be used on your blog.

Toni, I know I haven't got one picture in my 60+ blogs. I tried a couple of times and for some reason, no picture. I have the pictures, they just won't post...

Thanks for a new place to get images. I will check out the picapp.com. You can not just use a google image that comes up in a search, you must get permission from the owner of the image. I use a iclipart even though I pay a very low fee each year to use them, they are so easy to use, and their terms of use says you can use them for business. Congrats on your gold star:)

As for Flickr, though, I thought photos posted there were copyrighted. Does anyone know for sure that they're okay to use?

Toni-I hate to be a wet blanket but I was concerned when I saw that you suggested Flickr as a site to get free photos for your blog.  Most photos on Flickr are copyright protected and should not be used.  There are photos on Flickr that do allow for others to use and are marked with a creative commons license.  Many will say that our blogs are "commercial" and limits the use of a number of photos from free sites.

The same applies to google images and when I read what is on the picap site I see they clearly say non-commercial use as well.  We all have to be careful when we are randomly taking pictures from the web to use in our blogs.  It is better to buy a subscription to a site then chance being hit with a copyright lawsuit.

google images, istockphoto, flickr etc should not be used. People have assumed copyright on anything they put up. I highly recommend you use these sites if you want to make sure the photos you use fall into the fair use category. Sites that offer royalty free stock photography will have fine print that explains one's purchase only allows you to use it for non-commercial reasons. Using Flickr images is currently a hot debated topic

And people are starting to complain

Flickr even tried to sell everyone's photographs last year between july 3rd and july 5th as wallpaper, etc

Yes they are being licensed through creative commons (CC) but it may not continue to hold up much longer based on the current trend. Basically what it means is: as long as you give credit via a link leading back to the page where it was found on flickr then it's ok... as of now.

There's currently a case pending against Virgin Mobile by Alison Chang who used her likeness in an ad. It's still pending but these kinds of cases may rise especially if she's granted a favorable settlement.

If you absolutely want to use flickr and don't care about any future reprocussions, then get the attribution license which grants commercial use of pictures. When they speak of profiting from the context of the image it refers to having it on a blog with the blog being your medium for getting customers and potentially earning compensation.

Once signed up you can browse through and see the latest pictures added.

Here you can see the different types of pictures available by license type.

Thanks for letting us know about PicApp.com. From my personal experience (unfortunately) I know that Flickr considers AR blogs commercial, therefore you can't use their pictures, even with full attribution and link back to the author and all the other rules of "creative commons" license. Flickr could close ones account without notification and you could lose all your photos. I assume that if PicApp says only for noncommercial purposes -they view "commercial"  the same way as Flickr. Google images come from different sources, and usually require permission of the photographer in writing. Like Katerina I use Iclipart.com to avoid any ambiguity about the allowable use.

Thank you Toni. As much as I like free pictures, I believe that we should shoot our own. They might not be perfect... but they are ours! Stay clear of legal responsabilities and accountabilities to the authors of those pictures, they might be free today... and not tomorrow. Once is posted here, it stays here forever!

One of the biggest challanges we found at Initial Underwriting posts has been the use of pictures.  It seems that normal un-html messages deliver the message a lot easier and more powerful to the average clients.  Correct me if I'm wrong, people like to have the simplicity sometimes.

Toni...

Thanks for the tip, I'm always looking for new places to get my pictures.

There did not seem to be a way to just click on the image and save it to my pictures, only embedded code, publish now, or put in your lightbox.  Am I missing something, or can you not just download it to your picture file for later use?

I sometimes forget to come back so if you have the time would you put this on one of my blogs or e-mail me?  I promise to retire the favor :-)  Liz
