Permanent wave machine for Shirley Temple curls

permanent wave machine

The Shirley Temple look was the epitome of every mother's dream for her child.  Those little curls were so gorgeous.  I can't remember knowing Shirley when I was little but I remember my sister coming home from getting a permanent with the most beautiful curls.  They were not combed out but just tightly curled.

I wanted the same look.  Having a classic fit, probably, I got to go to the beauty shop too.  I vaguely remember this machine that I had to sit under so when I saw this photo I thought it would be good to share.

My results were far from ideal.  In fact I probably had the ugliest hair of anyone in my school or family.  It took a long time to grow out and gave me a bad feeling about permanent waves.

Love your sort of lopsided hairdo, Barbara.  But you didn't have the Shirley Temple curls which were called weinerwurst curls or something like that.

I still remember to this day getting a permanent at Hope's Beauty Shop in Searcy - and sitting in a chair hooked up to those curlers.  Mother AND Hope had to stand there and fan my head with a magazine, they got so hot.  You'd think my hair would have been singed, but I don't guess it was.   You couldn't get kids to even go near a machine like that NOW.....and even then it looked like something from outer space.   We were saved by the Toni Home Permanent.

Barbara, I sure wish I could market the way my hair looks when I get out of bed in the morning---even Shirley Temple would be jealous:)

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

I looked just like Shirley Temple when I was a kid -- a spittin' image. My mother used to wrap my hair in rags (not rollers) to make long curls. I wish I had a scanner so I could send you a photo. You'd get a big kick out of it. But I don't have any way to scan old photos anymore. I had to give away my scanner when I bought my new Mac because it didn't work with OS X.

I have to post a photo of Anita in curls.

Also since the topic today is perms, here's Paula Anne and her mother Annie in curls.

Anita, thanks for verifying that those machines were horrible.  It did ruin my hair as the picture shows.  I wasn't even brave enough to do a Toni Home Perm after that experience.  The only perms I've had since were the afro type.  I loved those!

Charles, is your hair curly?

Elizabeth, we're dying to see the Shirley Temple you.  Take a picture of the picture and put it in here.  Also check on a Fujitzu ScanSnap for scanning pdfs and jpgs.  It has a plastic sheet for enclosing pictures and running them through.  They're great!

Don, you are so funny with the picture of Anita with her curls!  And the one of Paula and her mom is beautiful.  Paula is our photographer who did so many pictures with her camera for a Girl Scout project, in any of you are reading this comment.

Steven, you shouldn't have said that.  Charles may overhear and HE WILL post them!  These machines were something else, weren't they!

Barbara:  You were just an adorable little lady in those pictures... all hooked up to the machine, and then showing off your curls.  You looked adorable, and of course, you have only gotten better with age.  :)

Karen Anne, I'm so sorry that I may have practiced deception.  I was NOT the cute little hooked-up girl.  I was the ugly one at the bottom after having sat under a machine like that.  After rereading the blog, I can see how you might think I was that cutie.  Thanks for comment.

I remember a first perm too, but was not hooked up to any machine like that. Looks lik you would need a mechanical engineer degree to work it,

Perm machineAnita has sent us this picture and article about the old perm

machines in this blog.  She swore someone had to fan

her when she got a perm and sounds as if she was

totally correct.  Wonder if any of these things still

exist!
