Lakefront Living on the Harris Chain of Lakes

Over the last few months I have had the pleasure of assisting several buyers looking for lakefront property on the Harris Chain of Lakes in Lake County Florida.  This chain of lakes is special because it allows you to boat from the Mount Dora area all the way to Silver Springs and on to the Ocklawaha River then the St. Johns River which eventually spills into the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville.

The properties in this more rural area frequently offer more land, privacy and value than comparable homes closer to Orlando on the Butler Chain of Lakes.  Bear in mind that this area has a definitely more rural and country like setting.

In addition to lakefront property, this area offers many homes on canals leading to the lakes.  This makes available an even more affordable option.  These homes normally have boat houses just like their lakefront counterparts.

Updated homes on a canal begin in the $500K dollar range while updated lakefront homes begin at $675K.  Both can reach well into the millions.  For the handyman among you, older homes needing updating can be found for less.

One thing you won't easily find are newly constructed small single-family homes.  The area has become enough in demand that prime lots have prime homes built on them, which means larger homes as well.

I strongly recommend a leisurely Sunday drive through the area and lunch at one of the many lakeside restaurants available along the way.  Whether you are in the market for a home or not, this will be a pleasant way to spend the day.
