Which Side Of The Sink Should A Dishwasher Go?

Carol, I think the location of the dishwasher depends on which cabinets you put your glasses, plates, and silverware. Being left or right-handed doesn't matter to me, as I'm a lefty, and we usually can adapt. As I think back, (I've lived in so many houses) maybe most are to the right. Who knows? ~Pat

This should not be a deal breaker.  You should be able to adjust to any side if you like the house.

Hi Carol, Common sense would dictate that a dishwasher should go either left or right, adjacent to sink because of the plumbing being close by. But I have seen dishwashers located in the most unusual places, so none thing surprise me anymore. So to your question left or right of the sink is fine if you asking me.

I prefer it to the right as it is more convenient for me, being right handed, but I would say this generally isn't the number one consideration for a buyer in purchasing a home.  Its more of a luxury if you get it where you want it.

Carol, as a kitchen designer, I can tell you that while there might be some "ideal" side that can be argued, the layout will usually dictate.  Most layouts do not give you the luxury of "choice."  In my experience---if you do have that luxury the kitchen is going to be too big to be a real "working" kitchen.  I have seen kitchens where they are so big that one has to own a Segway to get from one thing to another:)

Hi Carol, I'm Right Handed and our dishwasher is on the right of the sink.  Which sounds perfect, and it's OK for loading; alas, when it comes to unloading it's a pain due to the layout of our kitchen.  To be able to get to the cupboards you must close the dishwasher door as it blocks the space between the island and counter.  All in all, I can't believe this could break a deal but I have seen stranger things make people walk away.

I think the dishes come out cleaner if the dishwasher is to the right of the sink.. no really think about it ... ok I am kidding but ours is on the right and being right hand I have to wash with the right set down my sponge transfer the dish to my right hand place dish in dishwasher rinse and repeat. so if it was on the left i could save a step .. but then I would not get that like extra look at it... hmm I have thought about this way to much

Guess there is no right or wrong location. It is a matter of personal preference. Ours is located on the left side of the sink. We are left handed, all wonderful people are, (Grin). This location if most comfortable for us.

Not on a dishwasher.  I remember when we ordered our fridge though they asked if we wanted a left hand or right hand opening.  The layout of the kitchen really made no diffence so we opted for the  right hand, but we had to think about it. 

Ever since then I tend to focus when I am in propeties how the fridge opens now. 

Carol, I have a real preference.  I have the dishwasher away from the sink in the island.  Discovering the convenience was accidental.  I had a house that was built with no dishwasher and when we added one it was a rollaway permanently positioned on a side wall.  I loved it there.  When we built a house I put the dishwasher in the island and it works great.

Hi Carol... I usually lean more to the left on political issues, but I definitely lean right on diswasher placement! :)  But if this is a deal breaker for someone then I would say that they didn't really like the house that much anyway.

On the right is for me! But I am also right handed. I would probably want left if I was left handed. I work in old homes and we are lucky to get them in the kitchen at all! Glad you asked, and easy to answer.
