This past Friday was the monthly First Friday event in ever "changing for the better " downtown Bryan, Texas. My wife and I joined fiends for dinner at the River Bridge Restaurant and it was as good as the last time we dined there! They have a good variety of steak, fish, and burgers.....But what I really like are those good old fashioned homemade southern style greasy French Fries. You know the kind...They taste like a real potato and not salty slivers of cardboard!
Then we took a walk to.... walk off the fries and visited all the shops that stay open late on First Friday. Neat little antique shops, a handmade glass jewelry shop, a coffee house, and an assortment of other interesting businesses. I notice the old City Barber shop is still open and has a Barbers pole out front! I imagine it has been almost 50 years since I actually had a haircut there. I had a flat top haircut back then. They also used to have a shoe shine man that really put on a show for a 25 cent shine. He would pop that shine rag to a "Beat" He also had a trick where he would put wax on shoes then light them with lighter fluid to melt the wax in and buff to a "spit shine." Which was necessary for black "Sunday Shoes" in the late 50's.
This is what I like so much about the new downtown Bryan. They actually have preserved some of the "old."
