West Paterson no more

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential Damiano Realty

Well...it's official. The Borough of West Paterson is disappearing. As of December 17, 2008 the residents of this community will be residing in Woodland Park, NJ. The recent name change vote, controversial for sure, passed by a measure of 2136 for - 2111 against. That's a mere 25 votes. So residents continue to be pretty much equally divided either for the change or against it. While there is a new effort afoot to reverse the change, the measure will be moving forward and the new name will become official.

Borough officials have stated that they will implement the name change on signage, municipal buildings, vehicles, and stationary gradually on an as needed basis. This certainly will add to the confusion a bit. So if you're interested in moving to West Paterson....I mean Woodland Park...give us a call! No matter what the name of the Borough is..we still promise our same great service to you!

Now how silly is that?  The borough is still right next to Paterson, and no matter what you call it, you can't change the geography.

Jim, I would think that with a vote this close they would recount. Either way, I have never been a fan of renaming a city.

Hi Lorrie! You make a good point, however...remember East Paterson? They changed it to Elmwood Park around '73.

Danny, they did the re-count and it was still this close but no change in result. This was the 3rd or 4th time it's been attempted and it's always been a pertty evenly divided result.

Hey Jim So much for tradition. I grew up in New Shrewsbury which they eventually changed to Tinton Falls so go figure.

Gayle, there have been a number of towns in NJ changing names over the years, can't say I remember New Shrewsbury though. Good one!

Jim,

This sounds like there will be a lot of confusion for a very long time.  Will the state be changing its name anytime soon?

Hi Don, I'm sure there will be some confusion for a time. And no, there aren't any plans for a state name change...at least not yet. lol

Did you vote for or against? West Paterson is a great community. There are some great properties there as well.

I'm a resident of Little Falls Sal, so I didn't have a vote. We share a Regional High School with West Paterson (& Totowa) and our kids all play sports together etc. I wouldn't have voted for the change if I had a say. I'm used to West Paterson. But there were strong opinions on both sides.
