KAPOLEI AND MAKAKILO, HAWAII NEIGHBORHOOD INFORMATION
Schofield Barracks and Wheeler Army Airfield, Hawaii: An Introduction to The Surrounding Area (Chapter 3)

My last post covered Schofield Barracks and Kunia Road, FT Weaver Road and the area around Ewa Beach.
After leaving Foote Gate at Schofield Barracks and heading south, you will run into the H-1 Freeway. By taking the H-1 Freeway to the west, you will run into the cities of Kapolei and Makakilo. Further on down the H-1 Freeway are the cities of Waianae, Maili, Nanakuli and Makaha. You will also find the Ko'Olina Resort just on the outskirts of Kapolei.
The city of Kapolei is relatively new and is being advertised as the "second city". By second city, this refers to it having the same amenities as Honolulu but it is on the Leeward side of the island. Kapolei still has a long way to go to catch up to Honolulu but it is beginning to grow like crazy. Driving time from Schofield Barracks to Kapolei and Makakilo is approximately 20-25 minutes depending on traffic.
Kapolei has several shopping centers, government buildings, restaurants, schools and neighborhoods. You will find Chili's, Safeway Grocery Store, Starbucks, Outback Steakhouse, K-Mart, Home Depot, Police Station, Golf Course, Movie Theatres and several other small shops, stores and restaurants. The city of Kapolei also boasts the only water park on the island, Hawaiian Waters Park.
The homes in Kapolei range in price from the mid 400's all the way up to 1 million dollars. Condos and town homes range in price from the low 200's through high 300's.
On the "mauka" side of the H-1 Freeway is the city of Makakilo. It is actually part of Kapolei and the mailing address says Kapolei but locals refer to the area as Makakilo. There is really not much in Makakilo except for single family homes, townhomes and condos. There is one gas station with a food mart and coffee shop attached. The single family homes in Makakilo range in price from the low 400's all the way up to above 1 million dollars in one of the exclusive gated communities. Townhouses are priced from the high 200's through the high 400's and condos are priced between the mid 200's and the mid 300's.

Schofield Barracks: Mililani, Wahiawa, Kapolei, Waipahu, Ewa Beach, Waipahu, Makakilo, Oahu, Hawaii Schofield Barracks and adjoining Wheeler Army Airfield are the 2nd Brigade, 3rd Brigade, Aviation Brigade, 45th Sustainment Brigade and the 8th Military Police Brigade. In addition, the 8th Theatre Sustainment Command, 65th Engineer Battalion, 25th Special Troops Battalion and the 556 Personell Service Battalion are also part of the Division team and play an integral role in the success of the Division.
There are also two Brigades that are stationed in other locations. The 1st Brigade is stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington and the 4th Brigade is stationed at Ft. Richardson, Alaska.
The 25th Infantry Divison has proudly served in numerous wars and conflicts around the globe. The Soldiers that make up the division are currently deployed to several locations to include Iraq.
