I took this photo when I listed a property for sale across from Lake Tahuyeh. It is a beautiful lake, and I have a lot of wonderful pictures of the parks and the deep blue waters, but this puzzles me. At the very end of the lake is a forest of dead tress. Other plants and trees are growing just fine, can anyone tell me why this part of the lake looks like this?
I'm no expert but I'm guessing that something got dumped in the water in this area. But still even if that happened you would think that it would effect the other wildlife around the lake.
Dinah, it looks like something happend - either fire or some kind of a disaster and then the new growth started...well, it looks very interesting anyway....good pic...Bo
Dinah, it most likely comes down to fire, flood or disease. I can't tell what kind of trees they are but unless that water is very seasonal most conifer type trees don't like living in standing water. Perhaps the area doesn't drain the way it used to because of natural or man made damming. Beaver damming is another possibility. You say it is on the lake? Perhaps the lake level is higher than normal for some reason?
I would agree with the notion that it is most likely natural. In the mountains here in Colorado I have seen similar trees near lakes with fluctuation water levels. my two cents.
Dinah,
As you may or may not know, Lake Tahuyeh is a man made lake. Prior to the dam being put in, the land which is now the lake bed, was swamp land. Those trees that you see which are dead but still standing are at either end of the lake. They died when the land was flooded, creating the lake. Both ends of the lake are conservency areas and marked as such. There is MUCH wildlife here - turtles, beavers, otter, bald eagles, ospry, owls, the list goes on. The ends of the lake have become a beautiful habitat for these creatures, great & small! My husband and I love living here and are very fortunate to have such wonderful neighbors! We all do our part to keep our beautiful lake clean so that it can be enjoyed by all.
