Yes....you read the title correctly. Apparently Freddie Mac is using the Spanish TeleNovela to teach Hispanics about credit, homeownership and other financial principles. For the uninitiated, a TeleNovela is sort of like a soap opera except that the main theme often reaches a conclusion by show's end unlike All My children.

Nuestro Barrio will use a popular media vehicle to educate and promote homeownership amongst Hispanics. "We really see it as responding to the needs of Hispanic households," said Vaughan Iron, Freddie Mac's national director for expanding markets. "We have lenders who are saying that they want to serve these underserved households, and the reason we are doing this now is to bridge the gap between the people who want home ownership and institutions that want to service them."

Freddie Mac, a government sponsored entity responsible for buying and securitizing mortgage loans is assisting in the project by underwriting some of the costs. "We knew that we couldn't reach the marketplace with just another brochure and with a Latino in front of it and with the same message that everyone else is putting out," Iron said. "That's how we got into Nuestro Barrio."

Producers hope to be able to provide DVDs of the show to homebuyer counseling centers and other community outreach centers. Nuestro Barrio will begin airing on September 27th in Dallas, Arizona, Florida and Georgia. I think this is actually a great idea.  I have seen many situations where people do not fully understand HOW the American credit system works.  It's not limited to one particular demographic, either.  Many immigrants (including the refigees from the former Yugoslavia) just don't understand the credit scoring system.

Soap operas as primers?  Why not?  Take it a step further, show a skit at halftime of football games.  Create a relaity show about using credit.  Normally I'd wonder who the heck would watch that but TV offers so little in programming now that it would probably be a hit.

Maybe a special edition FEAR FACTOR?

I have to say I am disgusted to see that we have to provide education mixed in with a "Soap Opera". I made a post about this (my opinion and based on what I read in the Miami Herald this past Sunday.  I just can't believe this media is the right tool to present "how to handle your largest debt".

I will make it a point to see the show next week and present facts of the show.

Brian - While I believe there is a need for an educational style show, I do not think the telenovela format is good for this purpose.  I do think they should do a reality show titled "The Biggest Gainers" and take people who have royally screwed up there credit and have them compete over 6 months to see who can repair the credit the best. (Don't anybody steal this idea, I'm calling NBC).
