Getting Things Done, Oh really?...... Well sort of is a start.

In an earlier post I mentioned that I was reading the book, "Getting Things Done", by David Allen.  At that time I had made it to page 30 for the second time and was again a little stuck.  I was stuck, not because the book is boring, it is just that by page 30, I was ready to jump in and get things done.  Having been challenged by my BIC to read the book, I knew that I couldn't put the book down.  I needed to finish the book.

For a week I struggled and procrastinated and could not allow myself to spend perfectly good day time hours reading a motivational book.  I also struggled with the thoughts of reading a getting things done book at night.  Who wants to go to sleep thinking about how they are not getting things done.  As it is, I sometimes wake in the middle of the night mentally going through my next days to do list.  So reading before bed was just not an option.

Finally I had a fantastic idea...Instead of sitting and reading and only getting one thing done.  I decided that if I purchased and downloaded the book to my MP3 player, I could get multiple things done.  So I purchased the book from amazon and downloaded it.  It took me two early mornings of regular house hold chores to finish listening to the book.  What a breeze.  I am glad that I have two versions of the book.  I can now go with the book in hand and skim to the important parts of the book that will help me set up and organize my work.

In purchasing the downloadable version, I came to an epiphany.  Motivational books are best listened too not read.  Think of all of the times that you have been motivated by a speaker and was ready to take on the world.  Now think of all of the times that you started a book about being great and working hard and ended up putting the book down due the feeling that you could be doing something more important.  So, from now on, all of my inspirational / motivational books will be downloadable!  Of course my English Lit teachers would probably be appalled.  But then again, I was a big fan of Cliff Notes!

Robin- Great idea on the audiobook. Listening to one of those on the treadmill would probably get me going!

Hi Robin, I listen to audiobooks like this on long car rides (reading forbidden while driving!) and on my IPod at the gym.  Makes the time go faster, and makes great listening to!  You can even pop in a CD while working out at home, or ironing :(.

Great idea, let us know if the book works for you.

It is a good read.  It can be a bit slow.  My office is moving in a few weeks.  I plan to use the book's advise in setting up my new pad.  So it will be awhile before I can say that it truely works.  I do know a couple of very productive agents who use the techniques very successfully.
