The Satellite Guy Bolted!

As I sit here and listen to music you probably wouldn't like at levels you probably wouldn't approve, I am reading all of the great blogs I subscribe to and quite a few more. I was reading Russel Ray's post. He is a home inspector/consultant in beautiful San Diego, California. His post today pertained to supposed cross-trained contractors and some of the suspect and dangerous repairs/installations they may make or perform. Russel had great photos of the cable guy's expert electrical grounding technique. I think Russel may have upset our friendly Satellite Dish Installation Technician. I will help out the dish installer and make sure he/she doesn't feel neglected! Then I have my own story and million dollar idea I wanted to share with you all.

It is not uncommon for homeowners in my area of SE Virginia to own a Satellite Dish for excellent television programming. Heck, I am a subscriber myself.

Satellite Dish near rake

Dish installers love to install these babies on the roof. As you can see from the photo, there is a great view of the SW sky! The biggest problem with them being installed on roofs is how the dish is fastened. 4 bolts are driven threw the roof into the attic. The bolts are then made laughably water tight by applying some sealant or caulk over the bolt holes.

instructions?

The above is a great example of the installation. Most of the super duper high octane rooster booster sealant has weathered away! (nice gutter right?). Now surely this could not cause a leak...

deck damage

So, now to my Million Dollar Idea! I will design a mounting bracket so the dish can be mounted. The mount will give the dish more structural rigidity so it will be less likely to blow off the roof. The mount will be installed in a way that it will not cause a leak! I will call it "The Right Way To Install A Satellite Dish".

Oh wait a minute......

Someone has beaten me to it.

Please, If you have a dish installed on your roof, make sure the installer uses the right equipment. When you have a leak, The Satellite guy has BOLTED!

David, that is grreat advice. Also one of the reasons I installed my dish myself and had them do the programming. I have had a leaky roof from this, so now if I need a new dish or I move, I do it myself. These guys aren't roofers, so they realy can't be judged too harshly.

You are right. I am a little rough on the satellite guys. I just wish they would use the rake board. But then I would lose $$$.

Very well written, by the way, good advice.   The dish installers deserve their scorn.  Irresponsible -  and they could charge for the plate.

Why dont they think?  Does it hurt?
