Tucked away at the southern tip of New Hanover County is the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Locals and visitors alike enjoy a trip to the aquarium to view marine life, and it's a favorite for school field trips. The aquarium has recently added a new outreach vehicle. This was purchased after the aquarium received a $15,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Southeastern NC and $55,000 from the NC Aquarium Society.
The truck allows the aquarium to share marine life throughout the state. It is equipped to support marine life for a week at the time....with hermit crabs, sea stars, whelks, horseshoe crabs, etc. The hope is that once the outreach vehicle visits areas like Raleigh or Charlotte, the kids will talk to their families about a trip to the NC Aquarium. And, yes, it makes for a great weekend getaway.
