The Pequot Library hosted a great event this evening as part of their "Meet the Author" Series. Benjamin Wallace was at the library to discuss his best seller "The Billionaire's Vinegar". The event drew a crowd of over 130 people! Ben Wallace told one of the director's of the library that the largest attendance he had at one of these events was 130 and I think Southport beat that easily.
The author discussed the early stages of his project and what his inspiration was in choosing his subject. He gave a background on three of the main characters and read a couple of excerpts from the book. "The Billionaire's Vinegar" was based on a true story surrounding the mystery of the most expensive bottle of wine sold at auction. He held everyones attention with the recounting of his experiences and findings during the research and writing of his book.
This was Mr. Wallace's first venture into writing and it was a winner. As Bill Russell, one of the members of the Board of Directors of the library noted, he set the bar quite high. After Ben's discussion and reading, he was available for a book signing and had quite a long line going. While Ben was busy signing books, attendees were whisked into the reading room for a wine tasting.
Bill Russell arranged to have wines for the tasting from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello Vineyards. The "most expensive bottle of wine" was said to have been a Chateau Lafite dating to the late 1700's that was uncovered along with several others when workers were tearing down a home in France. The bottle was engraved with Thomas Jefferson's initials which added to the value and history of it.
All in all, it was a successful event! Congrats to the Pequot Library for bringing another wonderful author to Southport!!!
