Not everyone gets the chance to sit down with a designer to get a custom home, which is why it's great to be in my position and see the process first hand. I really love designing and I want to give you some insight that helps when you're sitting down for your home. If you are going to build with us, we encourage you to look at plans online, especially our floor plans. Northwest Indiana is a great place to build, here is just a few tips on the design-end that will help you get a great home.
One of the biggest things I see is people not prioritizing which options they want in their home. For example, most customers know that they want walk-in closets, granite countertops and a two-story foyer, but they miss a lot of the bigger picture. As a designer I love to hear how you're family works and the dynamics of your lifestyle. Those little intricacies that make your family unique are really what you want to bring up in your first design meeting.
My family loves to entertain so the focal point of the floor plan is the kitchen. Anyone who has ever has a party knows it all revolves around the food. Our home has a big eat-in kitchen with that all open to the dining room. It really makes an excellent area both spatially and functionally. A kitchen island or pass-through is great, making plenty of space to serve food.
Here is another thing I see in a lot of plans. Most plans have a formal living room on the main floor, space that usually turns into a den or office. The problem is that both those areas you really would want secluded from the traffic of your house. The truth is that typically that room is right next to the front door. Did you think about moving that space up to the second floor to conserve your main floor area?
Pay attention to these things if you ever get a chance to design a home. You could really get something great that may not have come up in the countless floor plans you searched online.
