Shirley, had the mortgage companies worked with their clients, when all these problems began to surface, we might not be having this conversation.  A few weeks ago I was on jury duty, and while waiting to be called, wandered into a court room that was having foreclosure hearings.  Everyone without exception told the judge they had tried to work a deal with their mortgage companies, and every mortgage company refused, demanding payment in full, or else.  The judge commented that he hears that story every day all day.  As an aside, there are several foreclosed properties in my neighborhood for sale.  Right after the bush/paulson bailout, all the banks raised the asking price.  GREED, GREED, GREED!  The corporate bottomline and GREED is what its all about.  While this program may not be perfect, may not help everyone, for my money, if it prevents one foreclosure, that means one less devalued house on the market.  People need to remember, these vacant bank owned properties are what is dragging the housing prices down.
