Forget the Bailout -- California Says Let's Legalize Pot

Analysts in California say their state could raise $1.3 billion per year in additional revenues by legailizing marijuana.  It's been a hotly debated issue for many years now, and like Elizabeth, I'm curious about what you think.  Is it time to end "prohibition of marijuana?"

marijuana legalization in californiaBuy some pot, fix the state budget deficit, say lawmakers in California. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a democrat from San Francisco, introduced Monday Assembly Bill 390. The bill would allow the sale of marijuana to anyone 21 and over and tax those sales, generating much needed revenue for the state of California's coffers.

Of course, medical use of marijuana is already allowed in California, even though our federal law prohibits it. The same thing would happen if AB 390 passed. California would need to petition the federal government for a policy change. But President Obama has said in the past that he is in favor of decriminalization of marijuana, so maybe changing federal policy wouldn't be as hard as some predict.

The proposed law prohibts smoking pot in public places, growing it in public view or promoting its use near public schools. Analyists say sales of pot could raise $1.3 billion per year. Since the fine at present for possessing less than 28.5 grams of pot is $100 ($350 with penalties), the state isn't getting rich off prosecuting offenders and collecting fines.

What do you think? Is it high time to legalize marijuana or will doing so jeopardize the very fabric of society and destroy our moral fortitude?

Yes legalize it. The entire foundation of marijuana laws are racist in nature and should be abolished on that alone. Not to mention the ridiculous jail or prison terms etc etc. All based on completely falsified scientific data or no data at all and just a complete fabrication. Contact norml for more information the national organization of marijuana laws. They have been fighting this for decades and with good reason.

It has always made sense to me that they legalize it. I wonder if the Cartels have lobbyist that prevent it from going through? The lose of income would be devastating to them.

The Discovery had a documentary that explained how the whole illegal concept came about. It's about as stupid as burning witches at Salem.

Think about the job creation this would bring about. They should just sneak it in the next STIMULUS PACKAGE.

I agree that adults should be treated as adults.  If an adult can consume alcohol or cigarettes, they should be allowed marijuana too.

The people who use it are going to use it anyway might just as well make money on it and control the growth and HTC levels...

Richard ~ weed for medicinal purposes is already legal in California, with a prescription.

Shane ~ I'll take that as a STRONG yes from you.   ;-)

Denise ~ LOL!  I like the way you think.  :)

Susan ~ I couldn't have stated my opinion any more succinctly than that!

Caron ~ think about it  >>  $1,300,000,000 is what it be worth to California alone!

Lazarus ~ spoken from the heart!   :))

The name to remember when you want it done right.

Well, it sure makes more sense to legalize it and tax it just like beer or anything else then it does to let the drug dealers make all the money.

I *used* to know stuff about mortgages.

Yes, let's legalize it.

Then let's make it so that you have to have a mortgage brokers license to sell it.

That should solve everything!

Michael ~ That's what scares me - it makes sense!  And that's something we're not used to seeing from our government.   ;-)

JL ~ I wonder if it's the sixth sense....

Justin ~ LOL!  Hey wait, Real Estate Brokers first!  We'll let Mortgage Brokers have a piece of the sub-prime market, tho.   :))

I believe it won't happen.  Not because the public would probably like it to happen, but it would affect some of the largest industries supported by government.   Attorneys would lose business, the court system would be reduced in size and the many government supported organizations would be out of business.   So, legalization would put more money in the average persons pocket-he wouldn't have to buy it, he could grow it.

The liquor industry would fight it, the tobacco industry would fight it, the religious right would fight it and so on.  Doesn't matter what you want, you don't pay the spiffs to congress.

On a side note, to get our elected officials to do what is right, we have to do what is right, Do not contribute to any organization, regardless of idea that has lobbyists in Washington.  It just perpetuates the problem.   A better solution is to contact your elected officials yourself.  Take away their potential vote and they will do better.

You could be right, Dale, but I honestly believe we're reaching a point of exasperation and desperation in this country that we've never experienced before. We're already seeing so many unbelievable moves and movements, I'm just not sure the 'establishment' will be able to maintain its strangle hold. Time will tell, of course, and I look forward to the day when we both look back on this post and see what happened. Thanks for your comments!
