Have You Ever Heard Amazing Grace Sung in Cherokee?

By

Grandmother Beatrice ObersonMy grandmother was Cherokee.  I did not know much about her childhood.  Except that her father was a Cherokee Chief and gave his female babies away.  Grandmother and her two sisters were raised by white families.  There's a lot I'm learning about the Cherokees, and the one thing that really stands out is the Cherokee music.

I received the below video and it reminded me of my grandmother.  Also, Amazing Grace was my Dad's favorite song.  And, of course, my favorite as well.  So, for these reasons, I wanted to share this beautiful song Amazing Grace.  Enjoy!

Now I can say that I've heard Amazing Grace sung in Cherokee. I can listen to this and feel my grandmother's love.  She always had a smile on her face.  .

Rebecca-I have to agree... I have never heard Amazing Grace (no matter the language) without being moved.   What a neat fact to find out you are part Cherokee--how cool!

Hi Rebecca,

What a great version of the song! Thank you for sharing!

My grandmother was Cherokee too. And like you, I know very little about her childhood. She wouldn't talk about it. Growing up in Texas over a 100 years ago, she was very ashamed of her heritage. Pretty sad.

Did you happen to notice the bagpipes at the end of the song? Very appropriate considering it was originally written by a Scottish slave trader.

: )
