I was taught a long time ago that when you set out to do something, you have to determine your "WHY" that thing or person that motivates you at your core to succeed at what you are setting out to accomplish. For the past 12 years my "WHY" has been my son Jordan. He is a true gift from God and inspires me every day with his great attitude, his sense of humor and his heart for people. He is compassion in the form of a young boy who is part Boy Scout, part trombone player, part golfer, part photographer, part snips and snails and puppy dog tails.
I am a single mom who is the broker/owner of a real estate firm in the Texas Hill Country and my son should be osmosis become a REALTOR and make it a third generation thing, but I am proud to say that his dream and goal is to become an Air Force pilot. Since he was old enough to walk, he has wanted to fly and he is all about the military, flying and aircraft. But he has grown up in a real estate office, sitting through board of REALTOR lunches and committee meetings and will even be attending our legislative hill visits at the end of the month.
When he was a month old he would sleep in his carrier next to my desk while I conducted my real estate business and he is spoiled by the title company reps, loan officers, fellow agents and vendors who come to the office, always ask for Jordan and come bearing cookies, candy, gifts and toys. It is unreal! He is now in middle school and they still do this. I love it! Jordan is so uplifting, encouraging and has a great attitude and his faith is strong like nothing I have ever seen. Last night we were eating with Mom...she made her famous homemade vegetable soup which was perfect for the cold rainy day we were experiencing...and Jordan offered to bless the food.
"Dear Lord...Thank you for this food and bless it for us, thank you for the rain and thank you for our family and friends...and Lord make our real estate office successful...amen!" Mom and I looked at each other and looked at Jordan and both said, "Jordan, that was such a nice prayer...thank you!" He refers to the office as "our office." He asks me "Are we going to our office today?" He wants business cards with his name on them too. He even helped me assemble the furniture, arrange things and set up the office when Mom was sick and couldn't help me.
When I am training agents I always instill in them the importance of establishing their "WHY" and I tell them about mine. I am certain I have picked the right "WHY" and the best "WHY" that I could and the rewards of being motivated by providing the best life possible for my amazing son have been immeasurable. Whenever I have doubts, I count my blessings and remember that nothing is more important than faith, family and friends...because they are my greatest blessings that make the rest of life worthwhile. Figure out your "WHY" and count your blessings often!
