When I was growing up here in America there was a sense of personal responsibility conveyed to us from those in authority.

There were signs posted along highways and sidewalks that told us to "Keep America Beautiful" , "Don't Be a Litterbug" and my favorite (probably because I was and still am a camper) "Remember, You Can Prevent Forest Fires".

I remember walking in the woods and seeing trash on the ground. Did I leave it there? Absolutely not - I picked it up and sang the words to the jingle, "litter bug, litter bug, shame on you....". No way was I going to allow my country to get messed up by some "Litter Bug".

I wonder what kind of attitudes I would encounter today if someone were to drop trash on the sidewalk and I sang that jingle to them?????

When my grandfather smoked a cigarette in the car he would not think of throwing the burning butt out the window. He would have had us telling him that he could start a forest fire with that behavior.

We ought to think about turning the hearts of Americans back to some of the values instilled in us as we grew up and away from the mentality of "who cares anyway?" or "what does it matter?". We may have a cleaner America and perhaps a renewed sense of patriotism.

Judy, I remember all those campaigns.  I loved Smokey!  It's funny with all the attention on the environment and going green, you would think that those campaigns would be popular again.  It really surprises me in this day of enlightenment that people still do litter.

It's amazing how much trash is along the roadways. Especially now that we're brown season...yucky!

Sharon - I am appalled every time I see trash fly out from a vehicle in front of me. No one seems to care any more. Why don't we see public officials paying attention to this kind of stuff any more? They are probably too busy bilking us out of trillions to care.

Moni - There should be a huge vacuum cleaner going alongside the roads to suck up the trash but that would mean putting someone to work - maybe they can find the money in the "stimulus package"?

Judy -- I love the smokey the bear sign!  I still see them around some of the small NH towns!  A good reminder how just taking care of our own "crap" can keep america looking beautiful.
