richmond virginia real estate: Learning More About Art at Crossroads by Copying the Styles of Others - 12/09/13 09:38 PM
Last Friday and Saturday, I participated in a two-day art class at Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA.  We studied and copied styles of four renowned artists:  Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, David A. Leffel, Nell Blaine and Andrew Wyeth.

Often considered as one of the most talented artists residing in Richmond, Christaphora Robeers facilitated our class.  It was my first time taking a class from her.  Several of the students in our class mentioned that they've been taking classes from her for about a decade or longer.  She certainly has quite a following!

If you've never tried an art class … (0 comments)

richmond virginia real estate: Skills Honed in U. S. Military Can Help Sell Richmond Virginia Homes - 12/08/13 05:45 AM
Back during the Persian Gulf War, I was stationed in tropical Guam on a U.S. Navy military base and was there for two years.  Our mission was to support the Naval fleet from information gathering techniques.  Honestly, that's about all that I can divulge about my military duties even now.  I just happen to know the importance of confidentiality even after more than 20 years since my honorable discharge.

However, I compiled a list of some skills that were learned or developed that still are useful for me today as a civilian helping my clients with buying or selling homes … (4 comments)

richmond virginia real estate: Cary Street Cafe Brings Great Meals, Music and Friends Under One Roof - 11/22/13 03:21 AM
Does having a neighborhood restaurant bar along with live music appeal to you?  Recently, I spoke with the owner of Cary Street Cafe, Robyn Chandler, who shared her thoughts about having a successful local business.  Her comments are italicized in dark green below.       1)  How long have you been in business and are you the sole owner?  If not, how many total owners are there?    I purchased CSC in '95---so almost 19 years now.  I have always been the sole owner; I'm too stubborn to have a partner.   2)  What gave you the idea to start … (2 comments)

richmond virginia real estate: Pledging 10% of Real Estate Commissions for Selling Richmond VA Homes - 11/17/13 04:48 AM
Have you ever considered donating 10 percent of your weekly or monthly income to a charitable organization?  Do for think it's a best practice in real estate to pledge donations from one's commissions?

My pledge for 2014 will be to donate at least 10% of all my real estate commissions for the entire year to one or more charitable organizations.  It will be at least a 12-month experiment in faith for me that my business somehow does and will grow exponentially for 2014 and beyond!

Nearing the end of my second year working in residential real estate sales in … (4 comments)

richmond virginia real estate: Broad Street Station Now is the Science Museum of Virginia---And More - 11/15/13 07:18 AM
A Virginia state historical highway marker explains it all.  The Science Museum of Virginia used to be a bustling railroad station known as Broad Street Station.

Above is the state historical highway marker explaining the history of the building below.

This photographic perspective of the Science Museum of Virginia is at an angle.

Interestingly, this building also is listed on the National Register of Historic Places under the name of Broad Street Station.  In other words, it has achieved both state and federal distinctions!

While looking at the exterior of the building, I found one interesting … (1 comments)

richmond virginia real estate: Enjoying Fall Color While Inside Open House in Richmond, VA - 11/04/13 01:43 AM
The wonderful thing about having tree-lined streets in Richmond, VA, is that fall color can be enjoyed from within an Open House.  Of course, it's wonderful to head to the mountains to enjoy leaves turning blazing shades of red, orange, yellow and gold.  However, why not start by enjoying some fall color at home?

While conducting a Sunday open house yesterday (Nov. 3, 2013), it was nearly impossible for me to miss the great views from the third floor of this condominium.  Although I was holding this vacant unit open for one of our top producer seasoned agents in our … (1 comments)

richmond virginia real estate: Using Various Lucky Keepsakes in Our Businesses - 11/03/13 01:10 AM
Do any of you ever carry a lucky keepsake either in memory of someone or something?  If so, do you sense that these items have ever helped your business over the years?

For me, my lucky new keepsakes purchased yesterday at The Aquarian Bookshop in Richmond, VA, are three stones: obsidian strawberry, aventurine green and obsidian blue.  Everything in our material world is said to have an energetic vibration, and these stones all serve a unique positive purpose for me.  I plan to start carrying them along with me---either in my left pants pocket or hidden somewhere in my briefcase.

richmond virginia real estate: Last Day of Art Class Opens More Doors - 11/02/13 06:17 AM
Last Monday night, Oct. 28th, 2013, was our last class for oil painting at the Visual Arts Center in Richmond, VA.  For approximately two months of Mondays we met for two and a half hours at approximately 6:30 PM in our art studio and painted a different still life every week.

Although I'm more experienced with painting in watercolor, oil painting did teach me more about color and moving paint differently.  The one big benefit of oil painting is that it's considered "more forgiving" than watercolor, as an artist can easily paint over another layer---easily covering the layer below it.

richmond virginia real estate: Sabot at Stony Point Inspires Learning Outside the Box - 10/17/13 07:29 AM
While walking up to the front door of Sabot at Stony Point, my first impression was "Did I happen to find a backup Harry Potter film studio?"  The main building's size and architecture certainly is reminiscent of Hogwarts school.  One teacher in the lobby told me that students sometimes are gently reminded that they actually have work to do there.
Described as a neo-Tudor mixture of English Tudor, Elizabethan and Jacobean style architecture, the main building for this 28-acre estate was once was occupied by the Lewis Griffin Larus family and now is repurposed as a thriving learning epicenter for pre-school through eighth grade students.

Above is Sabot at Stony Point's main building, … (0 comments)

richmond virginia real estate: Using Our Toy Poodle in Business for Raising Rescue Awareness - 09/02/13 12:15 PM
Many of us have met a dog or cat we like or maybe prefer to avoid.  There are valid reasons
for avoiding pets, such as allergies.  Fortunately, poodles are considered hypoallergenic, so few
people are likely to have an allergic reaction to our toy poodle, Nathan.  When considering
having a dog or cat, please think about having a rescued animal.  Unfortunately, so many pets
are abandonned by their owner(s), mistreated, or both.  There are various animal rescue
organizations found on the Internet, so please ask around and see what organizations are
available in your area!

Nathan, like … (4 comments)
