Bobby Petrino is back in the news because he is back in Arkansas. I am not a football fan so why did I save this Arkansas Democrat Gazette news article? One reason! An adorable red headed young fan was in the picture. Let's blow it up!
Here is the enlarged picture of Tyler getting his shirt autographed by Coach Bobby Petrino. See the adoration in his eyes! He loved the Arkansas Razorbacks and the coach. He was about 10 or 11 years old with a wonderful abundance of red hair! Wonder where this shirt is now? It may be valuable!!

There is money waiting for some folks......but not for me YET. Therefore, I decided a good name for this blog would be, Give a Gift for Free. That is what I did. This website is easy to find and search. So I decided to search for money that might be for family members.

Hotel Mayfair, Searcy Arkansas
This picture was published in the August 1936 White County Centennial Edition of The Daily Citizen and White County Citizen. It's the Mayfair Hotel in downtown Searcy and what impresses me the most if the extensive foliage around it. If the trees were this big at that time, how big must they be now? If they are still there.....

A friend and I were visiting an estate sale a few days ago. The sale was for property from a very well known Searcy AR person who had passed away. She had grown up in Searcy, moved away for years and years, and then moved back. There in the house was hanging a white-looking jumpsuit thing with letters on the back. Searcy High School Band. It was tiny looking so she must have been a small high school girl when she wore it.

I remember days like this.
My mother was "tickled to death" when she was finally able to have a washing machine like this one. It was still work to wash all the clothes and hang them on the line to dry but not nearly as hard as it was when she used an old iron pot over a fire to boil the dirty clothes. And PULL THE WATER UP OUT OF THE WELL!

Drug Store? I just guessed that it is a drug store bcause of the stools at the counter and the chairs and tables on the side. Perhaps it is a diner? It's another old picture that I found at an antique store but it unfortunately does not have a name or date on it. It has to be old with the men in ties and the neat tableclothes and the lady looking as if she has on one of those stretch belts that used to be popular. This is one of my favorite old Searcy pictures on a post card. I like the way it was noted at the top, "Stayed here once." And the old cars gathered around show its popularity with Searcy folks. I have written several blogs about it. But this one is perhaps the saddest one. Look what happened on April 18, 2016.

arkansas: Thida AR, population 81. I visited for the first time.

I went to Thida Arkansas for the very first time yesterday. A native of Thida, Debra Wilson, showed me all around. She grew up there, walked the streets there, and met her husband there. It is a lovely little town. Here are three pictures of the town.
This is an old store, no longer in use but notice the writing. Looks as if it says, Attn, Deb!
Here's the post office, a lovely little brick building that is probably open a few hours a day.

A lady can brag, can't she?
Here I am on the extreme right at some national or state REALTOR meeting. I can't actually remember the date but we were all younger. On the right, second row, was Chris Polychron, a good friend to all of us in Arkansas.
On the front row with me was Tina Daniel, left, and her mother, Johnnie Beavers, in the center. Tina died just a few short months ago and we miss her all the time. She was a CRS instructor and traveled all over in her teaching career. She was from Searcy also.

Vac Veterans from facebook has put up another old picture. It shows one really fancy stable.
It is labeled Searcy and Heber Daily Stage Line. J W Blevins Livery Stable.
It shows men and horses and a stagecoach. One guy may be on crutches?
I have never seen this picture before but Mary Cargile gives a possible explanation for its location. Go to the facebook page and read what she says. And thanks, Vac, for allowing me to repost it.
Vac Veterans also says it has "Main St" in pencil on the back of the picture.

You gotta study these pictures. I glanced at them when Don emailed them to me and thought, "Why are those people all dressed alike?" I still don't know but going a little further and looking to see if there were any familiar names, I found a lot of humor. First see the picture of the Domestic Science Class.
Now see the Officers of this class. Also note that there are NO boys in this class.

Studying the ads in an old Woman's Missionary Society cook book reminds me that Searcy has not forgotten her history.
Robbins-Sanford exists again in the form of a grand hall for holding get-togethers of all kinds. It is located in the same spot downtown and all of Searcy loves it.
Here is the ad from the old cookbook that dates back to the 20's.

Taking a walk can be rather boring. But while I was walking this morning I got all excited about the crop of mushrooms that had just popped up.
These are giant mushrooms! One of them would fill your plate! They looked like the ones in the grocery store that cost major dollars.
So can someone give us a few lessons on how to harvest a mushroom or toadstool as they are sometimes called in the South? I have only known one person in my life who felt confident about gathering fresh mushrooms and safely eating them. She no longer lives … (6 comments)

What happened to all the HUD houses for sale?
Anyone who is shopping for a HUD home has noticed that the listings for Arkansas properties on hudhomestore.com have all but disappeared. It happened suddenly, around mid-November, much to the dismay of bargain hunters throughout White County and around the state.
Here’s what seems to be going on.

Probably 35 years ago I rescued a batch of photographs of houses in Searcy Arkansas that the husband of this lady had designed and built. The pictures were nice and clear black and white and the floor plans were included.
This particular house sold and I gave the old photo to the buyer. He is no longer the owner now and I asked for a copy of the picture back for this blog. Blogging at that time was not even in my vocabulary. So Searcy Sleuths see if you recognize this one.

The builder of this house spared no expense while constructing it. The best of everything was put in. The best of tile was selected and securely placed on both the front and back porches.
They forgot something, however. When it rains the tile gets wet. In the mornings dew is heavy and can also be on the front and back porches.
The tile that they chose was a clean-looking white. It is also slick! Even with no rain this tile is slick and smooth. When it is wet it becomes a floor that can send you flying in no telling which … (8 comments)

Anita responds to my blogs a lot and takes a lot of teasing without getting angry. So I feel that it is time to brag on beautiful daughter, Karen Fuller, originally from Arkansas and now working in Kansas City.
Karen inherited all the great qualities from her mom and dad and became beloved in Arkansas when she was a news anchor for KATV Channel 7 in Little Rock for about 5 years. She interviewed and visited with famous people. See her with President Clinton below.

arkansas: Judsonia to Kensett bridge that is now closed to through traffic until it can be repaired.

This old picture of a bridge just says that it is near Searcy Arkansas. I'm thinking that it is the bridge that connected Judsonia with Kensett without folks having to drive miles around. If so, it is the bridge that is now closed with the county trying to find the money to make repairs. Being in Judsonia the other day, I took this next picture.

arkansas: Oh, NO!! Honey, come quick! The little green light is on! Heat pump!

We love our heat pump. It works great most of the time. It is so economical and we were promised low bills by the electric company when we reluctantly installed one in the new house years ago.
It proved to be a good promise. They did say, however, that heat pumps are not good in extremely cold weather. Look where the temp gage is today!!! We hardly ever see that needle so close to a zero!
Frightful. We run around asking how people can stand cold weather like this ALL the time.
