remax advantage realtors: HELP! Portrait on silk scarf. 1951. Soldier picture. Korean War? Japan? - 04/11/23 10:02 AM
Never before have I seen one of these and every person that I ask says the same.  Found at an estate sale, borrowed for this blog!  It appears to be an oil painting of a soldier done on a very thin scarf.  Size is about 14" x 14".
Here's the overview.  It has lots of folds because it has been folded and stored since 1951!
Here is the back side of the painting.
And here is a close-up of the person in the painting.
Handsome, wasn't he!
Here is the signature.  Yokosuka Japan 1951 K.Takano  Was that the name of the artist?  The posed person?  The … (7 comments)

remax advantage realtors: M.D. Faith photos. Downtown Searcy AR. Shaklee. Parking meters. Rialto - 04/10/23 10:40 AM
We have shown several pictures in the last few weeks that were taken by REALTOR  M. D. Faith in Searcy AR.  The pictures were taken around 1979 or 1980.  Here are four more, pretty close neighbors.  For greater detail, enlarge them.

Here is our court house again but one thing is strange in this picture.  In the distance on the right is a sign saying Shaklee Center.  Is that what was being sold many years ago to help your health?  And there was a store downtown?  Also note parking meters!  Young people today have probably never seen one.

And now we see the … (6 comments)

remax advantage realtors: GO! Hurry! Sowell's Furniture, Searcy AR, celebrating their 85th!! - 03/31/23 11:00 AM
Sowell's Furniture is celebrating their 85th year of business in Searcy AR.  I visited it today and came away SO impressed.  The furniture is lovely and the art work is especially lovely and the cookie was delicious.  But the things that were so interesting were historic items as I show a little of here. Their location is 207 W Arch in downtown Searcy.
First and second pictures show the antique elevator.....still in use!  Absolutely amazing and unchanged!

Third picture is upstairs and shows the antique flooring!
You can go upstairs and see the ceiling decor that is still there!
All the furniture is fantastic......so different … (2 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Brand new! Shiny! Tag still on it! Fire hydrant, new subdivision! - 03/28/23 11:10 AM

Isn't this thing as pretty as a new toy!!  It is new....but not a toy.  In July 2021 we wrote a blog about a new subdivision starting in Searcy AR on Country Club Road. Here is what the blog said.  Go here if you want to see the sign.  https://activerain.com/droplet/FHl5
Welcome to a new subdivision coming to Searcy AR.
This sign has just gone up at the Corner of Sawmill Road and Country Club Road on the West side of Searcy AR.  The land has been in the Phillips family for many years and is now to be turned into a subdivision by … (2 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Caricature birthday. Paul Smith. Valerie Smith. Funny 1985 card. . - 03/14/23 11:20 AM

Too-tight mom refuses to pay for a birthday card and just makes one herself.
My kids had grown up and were living in California.  I was an art teacher and had been to caricature classes in Georgia and felt I could just make a card myself.
This was in approximately 1985 and it was saved by Paul. (Bet he would not have saved a bought one.) It recently resurfaced and I thought it was pretty funny.  Note the length of the telephone line!  There were no cell phones then.
Here's another caricature that I did and it will tell you how to do them.  … (4 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Chit, Chat and Chew brick wall! Amazing hand painted sign. Searcy AR - 03/04/23 12:03 PM

I had lunch at Searcy Arkansas's Chit, Chat and Chew restaurant.  Is is on Race Street on the street with the historic Rialto Theater.  There are two separate entry doors.  I sat myself down and looked around and was amazed to see this large brick wall with a Coco Cola sign painted on it.  It was once an outside wall, I am guessing.  The person who served my food was extremely nice and said that folks had said he should just get rid of it, paint over it, and it was not worth keeping.  I agreed with him that it was … (6 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Pastime Pool hall, Searcy AR, Historic photo, Spruce St downtown. - 02/27/23 01:00 PM

Taking a picture of a picture is not ideal. So I am sorry the picture is not quite straight.  But......
While visiting a historic location on Spruce Street in downtown Searcy AR I found this picture of "how things used to be" at the location. It "used to be" a pool hall so I took this picture of the picture.  It was called Pastime Pool Hall.  In the picture are 4 men that some may remember.  One is Tom Killough (owner of the business), another is Tom Head, another is Lloyd Welch, and last Elvin Hilger.  The pool and snooker tables are … (3 comments)

We have shown several pictures in the last few weeks that were taken by REALTOR  M. D. Faith in Searcy AR.  The pictures were taken around 1979 or 1980.  Here are two more, pretty close neighbors.  Top is one to be loved and cherished, the Legion Hut, that is very historic.  Second is (look closely) First National Bank.  It is still there.....lovely.....but with a new name.
The Legion Hut was built in 1934 and has a long history.  Go here https://www.whitecountyhistory.net/legion-hut and read more about its history. It is a treasure that we hope to uphold.  The First National Bank building has … (2 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Happy Anniversary special gift for friends. Historic photos. Searcy AR - 01/29/23 11:42 AM

Lovely Happy Anniversary Card.
I am calling it a card but it is really about 20" x 28".  The photographs date back to around  1945 when he was fresh out of service and they were married.  In 1995 they had their 50th anniversary and that is probably when this gift card was made.  It is very attractive with the photos surrounded with the black lines that make them really stand out and then glued to the poster board.
There is no date on the card and no formal signatures so we will not call names.  The card was left in a house and … (4 comments)

Another M. D. Faith real estate photo from around 1979. Searcy AR
As I began two other blogs,  M. D. Faith was one of the early real estate brokers in Searcy AR.  He and his wife have both passed and their home on Pleasure Street has just sold.  An estate sale was held and I dropped by.  There was an envelop with negatives in it from pictures made by him for his real estate sales or for his pleasure.  I have a friend who was able to print the pictures from the negatives (I returned the negatives to the heirs) and this … (3 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Another one bites the dust. Searcy AR, 710 West Arch. - 01/18/23 12:48 PM

710 W Arch, Searcy AR.....a few days ago.
710 W. Arch as it was yesterday, Jan. 17 2023.  It is being demolished as this picture shows.  It was in terrible condition so it probably had to come down.  The court house gives construction date as 1935.  An interesting thing about this house is that it was an old frame house and someone took the time and spent the money to rock around it.

Notice the back of the house now, the old wood siding, and the rocks that have been pulled off and piled in the yard.  It is sad to see the … (5 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Another one bites the dust! 207 E Center, Searcy AR goes down. - 12/21/22 11:34 AM

Built in 1907 and probably elegant.....now history.
This home at 207 E Center, located behind the old historic Rendezvous, is going down.  This picture came from the court house information.  It seemed to have out-of-town owners who didn't take care of it and did for care for it so it was in such bad shape that it had to come down.  Most interesting is that it was once the framing studio of Terry Williams, Searcy's fantastic artist and framer.  Terry did beautiful duck prints that can be found all over town including my house.
Here is one of the house going down on … (3 comments)

remax advantage realtors: More Searcy AR history. 1930 cheer leaders. Old historic picture. - 11/22/22 08:14 AM

Do you have relatives in this picture?  It was loaned to me by Betty Mote, who knows a lot about Searcy history.  I like seeing again how hair styles change and how girls seemingly have always wanted to have matching hair styles.
I assume the girls were cheer leaders but I don't know for sure.  And what's that man doing back there?  Here are the names written on the back of the picture.  Left to right:  Floy Elliott, Era Greer, Mary Elliott, Helen Gerbert, Evamae Caraker, Ludie Allen, and Wesley Gilliland.
If you have information, we'd love for you to share.

remax advantage realtors: Searcy AR Dewey Wright frying pan. Handmade. Old skillet. Who made it? - 10/01/22 10:48 AM

Who made frying pans?
While digging around in old stuff in my garage I came across this interesting frying pan (my folks would have said skillet).  It was different, kinda pale and not heavy at all.  But most interesting was the still-attached ticket saying "Home made for Dewey Wright."  I remember Dewey.  He passed away in January 2005 and he may have been a camping type.
But who, in Searcy Arkansas, would have been able to make him a frying pan?  If any of our Searcy Sleuths can remember, share it with us.  And if there is a relative of his who might … (2 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Valentine Queen blog. History repeats itself example. Anita Fuller - 09/14/22 10:01 AM
I know.  It is not Valentine's day or even close but this old blog that I did several years ago talking about a Valentine Queen for Searcy was fun then and is still fun now.  This cutie in the photo and what she replied is meaningful today because it shows that history repeats itself.  The picture of a girl on a boy's bike was a bit of a scandal back in the 1940's when it was taken.  Please go now to this old blog and read it.
Are you back?  Now if you did not take time to read the many comments, … (2 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Searcy Beethoven Club? What happened to it? Pat Pryor once leader. - 07/25/22 08:28 AM

Searcy Beethoven Club.
A friend of mine loaned me some interesting folders that she had found at an estate sale.  The folders were all about Searcy Beethoven Club history.  The club operated in Searcy AR and articles date back to at the least the 1950's and possibly earlier.  Lots of pictures showed that it met in member homes or churches or various places.  Assuming you know the husband's name, you may recognize some ladies because if I remember "way back then" we ladies had no identity except for the husband's name.  Seems as if I wrote a blog about that one time. … (3 comments)

remax advantage realtors: Another sad Judsonia AR tornado photo. 1952. - 06/28/22 10:45 AM

Another sad photo of Judsonia AR tornado
I can't remember where I got this picture but it brings back sad memories of the 1952 tornado that practically wiped out the Arkansas town of Judsonia and did damage to other towns nearby.  Perhaps someone can tell us the location of this destruction.  It is amazing to see the two story house still standing.  I did another blog that shows the famous Judsonia mansion before the tornado.  Click here to see it.  The mansion survived and is still standing.
