leon breeden: DENTON'S FAMOUS JAZZ FESTIVAL - April 23-25, 2011 - 02/17/11 01:20 AM
Denton, Texas, about 40 miles north of Dallas, has long been considered the king of jazz music education.  The University of North Texas is there, and it's the daddy of the famous One O'clock Lab Band that has played for kings, queens, presidents, and for regular people like you and me.

I suppose because of the Lab Band's more than 70 years of influence on the city, the citizens of Denton themselves are rabid jazz aficionados.  And UNT treasures its jazz programs and bands probably more than other colleges and universities treasure their school's athletic prowess.

leon breeden: JAZZ GREAT -- EDUCATOR DR. LEON BREEDEN MOVES TO DALLAS - 05/28/10 06:12 PM

JAZZ'S MOST FAMOUS EDUCATOR, DR. LEON BREEDEN
Over the years, I have written a number of pieces about Dr. Leon Breeden, whose University of North Texas 1 O'clock Lab Band played for U.S. presidents, foreign countries' kings and queens, and ordinary jazz lovers all over the world, during his twenty or so year history with the University.
He's had a great influence on my life throughout our 50-year friendship, although I have never studied under him and I was never offered the opportunity to so much as to sit in during a set, playing the piano or Hammond B-3, with one of … (3 comments)

leon breeden: LEON BREEDEN, JAZZ GREAT, BECOMES DR. LEON BREEDEN ON 8-14-09 - 08/05/09 12:18 AM
The University of North Texas began as North Texas Normal College.  A normal college was the name given colleges that primarily educated students to be public school teachers.
