family estates: What Defines a MultiGenerational Home? - 01/18/19 08:35 AM

If you want to change the world, go home and love your family. - Mother Theresa
What defines a Multi-gen home?  We're always amazed by the assumptions we hear. First of all, a mom and dad, or one parent, and children under the age of 25 is not multigenerational living. That's a nuclear family. Boomerang children, 25 and older, who come back home after a divorce, or a job loss, do count as a multi-gen living situation.  Generally, the reasons are financial - and short-term. The idea is to get the adult child back on solid ground for independent living. However, if a child, married or not, with children, … (22 comments)

family estates: Multigenerational Homes - Flexibility and a Sense of Humor - 01/24/18 07:42 AM

When talking about the importance of flexibility in a Multigenerational home, we’re not talking about the type of flexibility needed for yoga poses. Although, yoga and meditation are certainly good tools for coping with life in any household. In this particular application though, we’re talking about the ability to adjust plans quickly. Families always come with surprises – illnesses and health issues, unexpected obligations, and the many other little hiccups life throws your way. Add multiple generations or other family members to the mix, and you’re in need of some major Olympian style flexibility.  And a good sense of humor.

The ability to adjust … (28 comments)

family estates: Our Crystal Ball Real Estate Predictions for 2017 - 01/15/17 11:19 AM

Crystal Balls are lovely to look at, delightful to hold, but pretty worthless when it comes to predicting the future. Instead we choose to consistently monitor market trends, listen carefully to our clients, and pay close attention to who, and what, we attract. This hyper-focused tune-in helped us recognize the growing demand for homes with rejuvenating qualities, nature as neighbors, and elbow room for the soul.™ In addition, we noticed an increasing number of our clients were looking for multigenerational homes. Since we live the lifestyle too, it’s been a natural fit for us. Last year, with the help of our … (25 comments)

family estates: Multi-Generational Households - The Story of Us (May 1, 2016) - 05/01/16 12:54 AM
More and More Families are Embracing the Multi-Generational Lifestyle

Multi-generational households are growing in the US for a number of valid reasons. For us, it's joyful to of spend time with people we love, and the support factor as we share in the care of our aging parents is enormous. We've been living the lifestyle since September of last year, and it just gets better and better.
Sunday's are family day and we always get together for an evening meal. It rotates between our house, and my sister and brother in law's. Our parents have earned the right to have us prepare the meals … (40 comments)

family estates: Sundays are Family Day at our Multi-gen Home in Camas - 04/17/16 01:06 AM

Family Day at our Home in Camas
We are having great weather this weekend in the Pacific Northwest, and Clark County is no exception. Yesterday was simply lovely and today promises more sunshine with temperatures near 80 degrees. At our multi-gen home in Camas, Sunday's are family day and we usually work on a project together and finish the day with a family meal hosted by one of the couples.
Couples, you may ask? What kind of crazy commune are you living at in Camas? Actually, our home includes my sister and her husband, my husband and me, and our elderly parents. Here's the complete story if you … (31 comments)

A Good Chainsaw is a Valuable Tool for the Family Estate(Bernie Stea, my husband and real estate partner, writes this article for  News And Views of Clark County)
Buying a home in the country makes you realize the number of tools you need to keep the place well-maintained. (We’re assuming, like us, you prefer to do a lot of the work yourself - otherwise your landscape crew already has a good handle on this information.)  Besides the ubiquitous garden tractor seen on many properties, another invaluable tool is a chainsaw. Since moving to the Pacific Northwest, I have always owned a chainsaw - I’ve had several over … (24 comments)

family estates: Another Multi-Generational Housing Match in Clark County, WA - 07/11/15 06:59 AM
Matching Multigenerational Familes to Properties in Clark County, WA
There's a charming home built in the gentle hills above Camas. The sellers have taken great care to use organic gardening methods. An herb garden, fruit trees, and nut trees have been lovingly cultivated. Lawns and flower beds are vibrant and lush.
A bird house is positioned near one of the decks, during a recent visit a baby bird stuck his head out to get a glimpse of the world. Hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies zip through the air. Deer fences have to be erected here, or there will be no crops for the growers.
