copyright: ALERT! HOW TO AVOID BECOMING INFECTED WITH "THE RIGHT CLICK SYNDROME". - 04/12/09 02:28 AM
WHAT' IS "THE RIGHT CLICK SYNDROME"?
Is it contagious?   How do I know if I have been infected?  How do others know if I'm infected? How long does it last? What can I do to recover? Are there any lasting effects? Will others know I'm infected? WHAT IS "THE RIGHT CLICK SYNDROME"?  The right click syndrome is a chronic condition that compels ActiveRain members so infected to engage in serial copyright infringement.
Is it contagious?  No!  Members with common sense and a respect for the property rights of others have a natural resistance to the compulsion to right click on images and text content originated by another … (89 comments)

copyright: PLEASE DON'T PUT COPYRIGHT PROTECTED CARTOONS IN COMMENTS ON MY BLOG. - 02/02/09 09:29 AM
I GOT A NICE COMMENT ON ONE OF MY POSTS TODAY that included a large cartoon.
The cartoon was clearly a professionally produced and syndicated one.
If the cartoon has been purchased for republish, there was no notice.
If the cartoon has been purchased for any use, there was no notice.
If the cartoon was free to use, there was no notice.
There was no attribution.
I see this on ActiveRain posts regularly and I just ignore it because it's none of my business.

copyright: IF YOU'VE BEEN VIOLATED BY A COPYRIGHT THIEF, DON'T LET THEM GET AWAY WITH IT! - 11/26/08 07:15 AM
This post inspired by Tracy Santrock's excellent post describing her experience discovering that her content had been stolen and used by a competitor.   I could surely identify with her feelings of shock, disappointment and finally outrage.  I have felt those same emotions many times, each time I discover one of my location maps on a competitor's web site.  Not unlike my experience, Tracy discovered her content on a competitor's blog by accident.
CONSIDER THE IRONY.  In my case, I was reviewing Baltimore real estate agents' web sites looking for a referral agent.  I saw a comprehensive web site for the area of … (39 comments)

copyright: MY FIRST ACTIVE RAIN POST WAS ABOUT - YES! COPYRIGHT - 10/13/07 01:41 AM
"The more things change, the more they stay the same."
Yesterday, I filed my tax return for 2006.  Included as income for 2006 was $48,000 for money received for damages for copyright infringement.  This has been the average amount collected for the past 4 years.  In the future, statutory damages should be easier to collect with the recent jury decision in the music download case in Duluth, Minnesota:  "The recording industry won a key fight Thursday against illegal music downloading when a federal jury found a Minnesota woman shared copyrighted music online and levied $222,000 **** in damages. . . Things just got a lot hotter for folks who believe that they can just take resources and use them even when it violates the copyright of the rightful owner of the property.
This is a music download case where the defandant downloaded from the Internet and shared copyright protected music.
This is a landmark case and copyright protections just got more valuable.

WHAT'S A SNIPPET?Recent articles with information about the latest hot topic, mortgages and will anyone every get one again, have led to some powerful reading and some very powerful writing.  Unfortunately, it has also led to some, what I believe are (1) copyright violations, and (2) borderline duplicate content.  When researching a topic and you find something right on point in the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post or other web sites, blogs, etc., it is not advisable to COPY AND PASTE several paragraphs of the article, postit to an ActiveRain article and then, after giving credit, link to the rest of the … (23 comments)

ACTIVE RAIN MEMBERS WHO COMMENT ON COPYRIGHT SHOULD FIRST READ THE OFFICIAL COPYRIGHT OFFICE WEB SITE.
Checking my Active Rain messages this morning showed a comment made just yesterday about an article I posted about COPYRIGHT on August 13, 2006.  The comment was so wrong, wrong, wrong.
"You make a great caase for copyrighted material.  But alas most people do not               copyright their work so suing will not be an option."
THAT STATEMENT IS NOT ACCURATE.  SUING IS AN OPTION.  I've done it and WON.  I have filed suit and THEN registered the copyright.  Back in 2002, I had not the slightest idea that anyone, especially a fellow … (60 comments)

It appears that a RAINER got a post deleted because 99% of the post was not written by the member.
This is a gray area to many, but copyright is really simple.  The creator or writer of an article is the ONLY person who has the right to any benefit derived from publication or distribution of an article, movie or book.  Unless you have purchased and paid for the right to publish or distribute content written by someone else, you do not have permission to publish that material as content on your … (118 comments)

copyright: COPYRIGHT ENFORCEMENT REVISITED with AN INTERESTING ANGLE - 03/08/07 01:19 AM
My latest adventure in copyright protection enforcement has taken a very interesting turn.  A local agent recently got caught with one of my maps on her web site.  This is a local agent of a national company.  The agent and her broker are presenting a new problem.  While my map is no longer on their web site, Google has it indexed in "Images" with a link to the agent's web site.  Google Images and images in general are a very popular search resource for consumers and every day that my map is sending visitors to a web site not my own is costing me traffic.  When … (65 comments)

WILL FOLKS, PLEASE, PLEASE, GET THE MESSAGE - JUST BECAUSE YOU SEE SOMETHING ON YAHOO, GOOGLE OR ANY OTHER PLACE ON THE INTERNET, DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU CAN JUST TAKE IT AND USE IT.  IF YOU DIDN'T CREATE IT, MAKE IT, WRITE IT, OR BUY IT, YOU CAN'T USE IT.  IT ISN'T YOURS TO COPY AND USE.
Now, I'm trying to introduce a bit of humor into this matter.  Perhaps if only to get Active Rainer's attention.  But, this is a VERY serious matter.  You do not have the right to use images … (18 comments)

John Hruska complimented my Door Mat image and mistook it for "Clip Art".  I don't use Clip Art because I have a massive collection of photos and graphic images.  Remember the "Crab Images"?

I have had photos and graphics stored on my hard drives, CDs and numberous Floppies for years.  I am finally getting them organized.   I still have about 100 more to upload, but they will soon all be on a web page, Atlantic Lights.

I just read a helpful post by Jim Lee about tracking copyright violators through Google search.  One of the comments was from Kristal Kraft who posted that she is pursuing copyright violators.
Thank you Kristal.  It's been lonely out here.  I know that Alice Held has vigorously pursued copyright violators in the past.  Certainly, my battles over the past 2 years have been documented.  I very much welcome another real estate professional who will stand up and defend their property.
