victoria ray henderson: It's Important to be Kind but you don't have to be Nice - 05/23/17 08:12 AM
Our daughter just completed her first year of college.

She is double majoring in Political Science and International Relations so we've spent hours talking about world events and Washington DC politics. But a recent conversation, sparked by a psychology class, fascinated me; the difference between being nice and being kind.
According to Merriam-Webster's online definitions-

Kindness- the quality or state of being gentle or considerate
Nice-pleasant and agreeable

Kindness is a noble trait like honesty, courage, patience and compassion, kindness is a quality admired in others. Practicing kindness can be challenging like when...

a coworker aggressively expresses his/her political opinions your daughter or son yells that you never … (37 comments)

victoria ray henderson: Winning Strategies for Buying a Home - 05/20/17 05:32 AM
There are no shortcuts when creating a winning home buying plan
In the Washington DC area, inventory is low and there is competition for almost every house on the market. It can be quite a learning curve for buyers especially if this is their first time buying a home. In order to have a successful home buying experience, you will need to consider the following points.
Save money-The more money you have for a downpayment, the better chance you have of winning in a competitive situation. Aim for a 10-20 percent downpayment. If you don't have that much money saved, there are loan programs … (4 comments)

victoria ray henderson: Put the Awe back in Awesome! - 05/16/17 10:05 AM
IKIGAI
a Japanese concept that means "a reason for being". Everyone, according to Japanese culture, has an ikigai. Finding it is often a deep investigative search of self.

Awesome is one of the most overused words in the English language. In fact, it's used so much that it now means cool or okay. I like the original Oxford dictionary meaning; awe-struck and/or breathtaking. If we make a personal effort in our lives, to put the awe back in awesome, we are on the path to finding our "reason for being".

The inspiration for this blog came from this morning's featured guest speaker at the Bethesda … (0 comments)

victoria ray henderson: Vinyl Siding Installed Incorrectly - 05/13/17 12:09 PM
What Happens When Vinyl Siding Installation Goes Wrong?

Turns out there is quite a bit that can go wrong if the vinyl siding is installed incorrectly.

In our case, the vinyl siding had been installed without house wrap which is a synthetic barrier that goes over the plywood and under the vinyl siding during installation. House wrap protects the wood underneath the vinyl. Without it, water can get trapped behind the vinyl siding and cause wood rot.
In addition, the siding had improper flashing which is impervious material that is installed to prevent the passage of water into a structure. Water had penetrated behind … (0 comments)

victoria ray henderson: Characteristics of a Smart Home Buyer - 05/03/17 04:13 AM

Smart home buying begins before you search for a home

Wondering if it's time to buy a home? How does the process work? Where do you begin?

Check your credit score. Credit Karma might be a good place to start. Your credit score is an important part of the criteria lenders look at to see if you qualify for a mortgage. Your credit score is an overall financial picture. The score is determined by how much you owe, how timely you make payments and how long you've been using credit. A score of 660 or higher is considered good. The credit score … (0 comments)

victoria ray henderson: Dual Agency and Exclusive Buyer Agents - 04/20/17 06:25 AM
Exclusive Buyer Agents represent buyers 100% of the time
never sellers
Exclusive Buyer Agents are fiduciaries of home buyers with no conflicts of interest and loyalty to the home buyer in every real estate transaction.
Buyer agency is a real estate business model dedicated to buyer representation. Buyer Brokerages never take listings and never work for sellers.
In a Kiplinger magazine article, they describe exclusive buyer agency;

"Unlike traditional agents, EBA's don't work for listing brokers, so they avoid the risk of dual agency - when one broker represents both parties. EBAs are still paid by the seller, but they can promise to represent your … (10 comments)

victoria ray henderson: Flip Your Perspective - 04/18/17 01:25 PM
AERIAL YOGA
increases blood flow to the brain & makes you laugh!
Aerial yoga starts with you in a hammock made of parachute material. Large hooks, secured into the rafters, hold the hammock above the ground. The yoga teacher says the hammocks can hold 2000 pounds, so I knew I was safe. The teacher guides the class through inversions and yoga positions while demonstrating how to move the body using the hammock and straps. Since you are hanging above the ground, you are free to move your body into deeper stretches that you simply can't do on a traditional yoga mat.

victoria ray henderson: When Things Go Terribly Wrong - 03/24/17 04:51 AM
It happens...
and almost always things go wrong when there is a breakdown in communication. When things go terribly wrong, it can take a while to evaluate what happened. If emotions are particularly hot, it could be impossible to step back and be objective. But to improve interpersonal relationships and learn from our mistakes, take a deep breath and dive in!

"When you lose, don't lose the lesson." Dalai Lama

Own your mistakes - This is a humble practice but it doesn't mean you should apologize profusely. To own your mistake is to take responsibility for your actions. No one "made" you say something and no other person caused … (13 comments)

victoria ray henderson: Celebrate National Puppy Day Today - 03/23/17 11:51 AM
#NationalPuppyDay
adopt don't shop for your puppy!
This is my sister's dog Taz. Taz thinks she is a puppy.
Taz was rescued by my nephew who found her in deplorable conditions with a cruel owner. At first, Taz was scared of everyone and she barked viciously if you came too close. Because she had been abused, she didn't know who she could trust. But as the months and years passed, Taz began to trust my sister and nephew. Today, she is my sister's loyal companion and an excellent guard dog!
Today, weighing in at a slim 150 pounds, Taz is my sister's loyal companion!

victoria ray henderson: Is that Flipped House a Flop House? - 03/20/17 10:36 AM
The Market is Hot and Investors are Flipping Houses
Flipped houses can be great IF the flippers hired licensed contractors to do the structural, electrical, plumbing and the major changes in a home. If you're checking out a flipped property, ask to see the permits for work completed. If the workers didn't pull the proper permits, consider turning around and walking away.
Steve Carpenter-Israel, Broker & Owner of Buyer's Edge was quoted in a recent CNBC interview about a flipped house that was a flop. Steve said, " It's literally putting lipstick on a pig. "They're just doing cosmetic stuff and actually covering … (0 comments)
