The old Deener House, Searcy Arkansas, now a day care center.

The Deener House always led to confusion on my part because I had heard the term used a lot and I didn't know exactly what they referred to. Some said the Old Deener House.  Well.....does that mean the Deener was old or the house was old? Anita, my blogging friend, says that this is the Deener house and she knew and was friends with the girl who lived there.

Deener house

It's now a daycare center.  Don't you know kids like to drive up to their school and see the A, B, C's on the side of the house?  According to the courthouse records, this house was built in 1895!!  That's getting to be a little old.

Back to the story.  Anita says these next two pictures were made inside this historic house.  She loaned them to me.  They make me think of some handsome reluctant young man being cornered by some girl telling him to get up and practice dancing some more.  Perhaps Anita can set the record straight on the things going on in this house, which was "old" even 50 or 60 years ago!!

And Anita, that guy is pretty darned handsome!!  Were you somewhere around the corner?

I have never heard of gourmet wieners. However I suppose with Mr. James' BBQJimSauce or my delicious salsa, even a stinking old hotdog might be okay in a pinch.

ALTHOUGH, as we shall find out, the highest and best use for a squirrel soon will be SqGoo.

Nutsy, ignoring Ms Kate and immediately answering your comment, I'd like to say you'll love Ms Anita, a truly sophisticated Southern lady.

Also, Nutsy, I'm surprised that you have not mentioned your new acting commercial.  I saw it on TV this morning.  There you were on a parkbench with this really S L O W gentleman who was pushing CreditScore.  He wanted people to check their scores.  You had on little spectacles and did your job well.  I was proud of you!!

Back from Laughlin and feeling good.

The only time I was in the Deener house was to fix the T.V. Funny, Anita mentioned they didn't watch T.V. much but I guess they knew when it wasn't working. Judy remembered  that and mentioned it in our 1954 annual.

Judy Signing

The reason the salutation is "Dear T D" is she called me Tonald Dompson and I called her Dingbat (Archie Bunker, were you listening?). I'm not sure who first nicknamed her Dingbat. It may have even been me.

The oldest definition of dingbat  refers to to a character or symbol used in typesetting which gives an instruction to the printer. These should be removed before the text is published, but were occasionally left in by mistake. The character made no sense to non-typesetters and the association of "dingbat" with "nonsense" and "forgetfulness" carried over to describe people. I really don't  think dingbat fit Judy but it seemed like a neat nickname.

Don, thanks for returning.  Perhaps they had a "hidden" TV set that Anita never saw.  I'll bet that great big living room didn't have one.  I never knew where the term "dingbat" came from but I've surely called a lot of people by that name.....but never to their face!!  I don't remember your announcing your absence this time.  We missed you!!

Ms Kate, get away from that baby before you start baby-talking.  SqGoo is a favorite baby word.

Hands down Barbara you have the most enjoyable real estate blog I've read.  The pictures, the stories - I *always* look forward to what I'll find here next.  I can only imagine if Searcy was my stomping grounds how much fun it would be to see the pictures of old times.

Liz, thanks for commenting on the pictures.  I have really got to know Searcy better through this blog and doing some of its history.  I never thought of those things before.  The people who have shared the old pictures seem like great new friends now.  I love knowing them.

Jennie Brent Jones

Hi, I am Judy Deener Brent's daughter Jennie (Virginia) and I wanted to let everyone know of my mother's passing in August. My sister and I were by her side and she died peacefully. She was a true Southerner and loved her hometown of Searcy. My sister Lytle and I grew up hearing stories about the people of Searcy, including Anita, and she raised us to cherish our roots. We have wonderful memories of Grandfather and his neighbors and friends from our many visits there. Grandfather was a great presence in our lives. We feel fortunate to still keep in touch with our Aunt Mickey who lives in New York City in the same place she's been in forever. At some point, my sister and I would love to come back to visit Searcy. I have the interesting looking chair that is set next to the "trapped" fella in the picture to remind me to return for a visit.

Is Judy Deener related to Sidney Deener? I teach at Sidney Deener Elementary and am curious about Sidney Deener.

Jennie, thank you for the update about your mother's death.  I think I will rerun this blog so that others will see and perhaps read about her.  She was loved in Searcy and her friend Anita Hart Fuller has included her in many blogs.

I don't know the connection between Sidney Deener and Judy Deener but there were several of Deeners around Searcy. Sidney Deener was my second grade teacher. She retired the year after that, I don't know there was any connections between the two things. :-) My mother took over her second grade teaching job and held it for many years.

I checked out books from Richard Deener's personal library numerous times. I do mean checked out, he required the title of the book and my name be entered on a sheet. Many years ago, Judy Deener gave my Dad a gift of a leather briefcase with his initials engraved on it. We were relatives as well as friends of Mr. Deener. I don't recall why she gave the gift but Dad was quite pleased. Roger L Dobbins

Roger, he must have been a very organized man.  If I remember correctly, you send me pictures of a rock house which belonged to your family and was not very far from this one of the Deener's?  So you could have walked to his library?

Mr. Deener was an avid and prolific reader....as were his daughters Judy and Micky.
This is to Jenny: might you please contact me, thru this blog, as I would love to talk with you about your mother....and our long friendship. We were in each other's weddings.

Mr. Deener served on the Searcy school board and he had many, many books and magazines. He had just about every copy of National Geographic magazine and he would let me come over and spend hours looking at them and reading his books. I loved looking at the SHS yearbooks from the 40s and 50s with him. From what I recall, the Old Deener House was the house that Mr. Deener was living in and it was built in the late 1800s and the Deener House was the house I lived in next door, built in 1912.

Matthew Lee, how nice to hear from you.  I do believe you were in my art class at Searcy High.  I remember your living in the historic home beside this one and did not realize the same man was connected to both of them.  And I guess I would have thought the one you were in was the oldest!
