old houses: What is missing? 703 W. Race Searcy AR. One down, one to go. - 10/31/19 11:52 AM

This pretty little house that once had a front porch is on its way down.  While driving by I did my usual OMG reaction to seeing this one almost gone.  And then I started remembering that its neighboring house was already gone!  So, Searcy Sleuths, what was the neighboring house?  Ok.....here's the picture.  The White County Court House still has the two pictures on line.
The one on the left is gone.....with no signs of it left.  They are/were both owned by the Dale family and David Dale had told me they were going to remove the rock house for more room … (4 comments)

old houses: Visit North Elm and notice missing houses. Searcy AR - 12/17/17 11:03 AM

I know, I know, it's progress.  But it is still rather surprising to drive around a street and find several houses missing.  Just gone, like overnight.  This view shows the corner of North Elm and West McRae Street in Searcy AR.  You can see apartments in the background and the parking spaces across from the football field on the right.  The little house that was in the corner is gone and this small rock house has been taken.  It definitely was in disrepair but it was once a charmer, I'm sure.
A little further around was this charming home that was the … (0 comments)

old houses: Thanks, Terri Tarkington Milligan, Searcy AR for reviving a lovely home! - 01/23/17 04:41 AM

The house is almost finished in this photograph.  ( Pardon the debris on the side of the street waiting to be carried away.)   Terri Tarkington Milligan fell in love with this older home that had fallen into tough times.  Here's the way it did look.  If you walked under those trees the house was in terrible condition.
The house is located at 909 West Arch and has the pleasing combination of native stone and brick construction.  If you'd like, google Silas Owens who has become quite famous for his work in this type construction.  I also have done another blog or … (6 comments)

old houses: Fancy rock work from the past. 1935 built house, Searcy AR. - 11/15/16 03:26 AM

A closeup view of fancy rock work from the past.
Upon visiting this house in Searcy AR today I was once again so amazed to see this rock work from the past.  The house was built in 1935.  Imagine the time it took to make these nice long lines in the mortar defining each rock.  The rock, also, is different.  It does not look like a rock but more like a sponge.  Is it a different kind?
My "once again" refers to the house.  It was one of the first houses that I ever listed.  I was new in real estate and the … (12 comments)

old houses: Where was this house? Searcy AR probably. Shoffner Estate picture. - 03/10/16 03:11 AM

These are lovely old pictures of a house or houses that were probably in Searcy AR.  It was loaned to me by the Cargile Auction team to share with you.  There is to be an auction of the Shoffner Estate on March 19 2016 with lots of antiques, real estate and collectible items.  This appeared to be the same house when I first looked at them but upon closer examination, perhaps they are not.  Or perhaps it could be the same one with additions made?  I am hoping that someone may remember more about these houses and these people and can … (0 comments)

old houses: 1890 Built Kerr-Booth house in Searcy AR - 01/06/16 03:13 AM

The past is all here.  Including the friendly cat waiting beside the front door.  Take a look at this front door.  Notice the lovely wood with the beveled glass panes.
The house was built in 1890 as a Queen Ann Victorian.  It has had some changes but not enough to make it lose its historic value and charm.  It was occupied for over 70 years by members of the same family and had changes made in 1925 and in the 1970's.  Today we REALTORS toured it (Yes, it is for sale.) and saw lots of the lovely original features such as … (3 comments)

old houses: 401 E Park, Searcy AR, historic house now gone. Just a memory. - 06/08/14 09:46 PM

Here's an old memory.  This advertisement dates back to 1984 when a really good REALTOR, Lill Williams, had this property listed and made it sound like one heckofa deal.  It sold.  And it sold a time or two more.  Here is what it looks like today.

Yep, it's another old historic home that dated back to 1930, had 3824 square feet, 7 bathrooms, and impressive curb appeal.  I wrote a blog once saying that I had heard it was once used as a hospital and got straightened out by Searcy Sleuths that it was never a hospital. … (0 comments)

old houses: Another house gone, Searcy AR. West Arch & N Sowell corner. - 07/30/13 11:10 AM
While driving to work today, I came to a screeching halt again!  Those people behind me need to quit following so close and they don't need to glare at me as I pull over!
But there at the corner of West Arch and North Sowell were the monster machines busy gobbling up this house.
This is the way it looked not too long ago.  I snapped a picture knowing it couldn't be much longer in this life.
But I am sure it was once a lovely house and comfortable for many families.
In fact, our blog queen supreme Anita Hart Fuller … (7 comments)

old houses: 111 N Apple is for sale! Historic house built in 1930 and moved from Race Street! Dorothy Yarnell Warden's old home. - 06/25/13 10:55 AM
I'm excited and I MUST go visit this historic home that is now on the market for the first time that I can remember in my 30+ years of real estate.  I wrote a blog about the little girl who grew up in the house.
Dorothy Yarnell Warden, our respected historical oracle for Searcy AR history was on this blog.
Here's the house.

And here's little Dorothy at the house at its present location.

Dorothy reports that the house used to be where the Price Saver Grocery Store (Old Sexton's, old Safeway) is located now.  Here's what Dorothy said … (7 comments)

old houses: What a difference a clipping makes! Old house in Judsonia AR revived! - 06/12/13 11:42 PM
We had this old house in Judsonia to sell.  We begged for a yard clean-up to make the house show better.  Hold it!  Let's not call this an old house.  Let's call it a historic house because it survived the Judsonia 1952 tornado and most of Judsonia AR did not.
Alas, no clean-up....
It looked liked this on the side and on the front.

Fortunately, one buyer could see behind the bushes and bought the house.  A drive-by after the sale made us slam on the brakes and back up quickly to see if what we thought we saw … (8 comments)

old houses: The T. A. Yarnell house that was once in Searcy AR....and Mr. Yarnell in the yard. - 05/12/13 06:55 AM
We have featured an old house on this blog before and a former Searcian commented about the house.  Thomas Headlee wrote this comment.
Thomas Headlee I was told many nice architectural pieces were saved from this house....staircase for one. I think some of the iron fencing was moved to 400 block of W. Arch...Mr Petty's office. I could be mistaken. My great grandfather's house was just east of here....T. A. Yarnell.

So we begged him for a picture of the T. A. Yarnell house.  He has sent this one and wrote a nice note for history.   This … (17 comments)

old houses: Old house in Des Arc, AR. It must have lots of memories. - 05/01/13 11:12 AM

Imagine the memories that are locked in this old house.
We were traveling the main street in Des Arc Arkansas today when I spotted this gem.  In Searcy Arkansas it would already be a "has been" but for some reason it is right there with trimmed lawn on the main street of town.  The sheer simplicity of its design pleases me.
I suspected my activerain friends would like seeing this one so I snapped this picture.  Perhaps someone will know something about its history and share. Des Arc is a small town that is well known for its parked … (15 comments)

old houses: A glimpse of the past on Foster Chapel Road, Searcy AR. - 04/02/13 12:20 AM

Don't get me wrong!
I am not pleading for saving a historic home or feeling nostalgic remembering days long gone.
But while driving in the country, this house had to catch my eye.  It is so simple, so worn out, so forlorn sitting out in the middle of a cowpasture.  It reminds me so much of houses that I used to see in South Georgia where I grew up.
There's an old barn-type structure behind this house and a huge tree in the back yard.
It is truly a glimpse of a past but probably best saved with … (11 comments)

old houses: Police Chief snow person! Made in 1961 on West Arch Street, Searcy AR. - 03/07/13 10:15 AM

You can't help but LOVE this picture!  It was provided by Bridget Hart and here is what she said about the picture.
It's my two kids, Charlie and Ann Hart, in 1961 in front of 1310 W. Arch.
Their grandfather, Dick, was on the Searcy Police Department then. The
mustache is a leaf they found in the snow. Notice the tiny snowman on the
porch. Their baby brother, Cliff, was inside the house. Of course,
everyone on the street knew who lived there. We lived in Des Arc at the
time, and were there visiting the kids' grandparents, Dick and Tete Hart.
The mustache is … (8 comments)

old houses: For Searcy Sleuths....where was this house? 1310 W Arch and it still stands. - 02/21/13 09:35 AM
The Searcy Sleuths love a challenge.  They can find anything.  One of them ropes Mr. Google and forces him to go up and down streets of any town to find the treasure.
So I have great pictures of a house in Searcy that dates way back.  It is actually sort of historic and I have learned a lot about it in the last week or two.
But let's begin with the old pictures of it.

These are wonderful old pictures.  The third picture shows where a porch used to be and it had a dug well.  Look at those beautiful flowers....and the lady!
 So, go, … (18 comments)

old houses: Moving on from one big house to another....608 N Spring Searcy AR had a fire. - 01/21/13 02:29 AM
This big old house on the corner has always interested me.  For as long as I have known it, it has been cut up into apartments.  It is just a couple of blocks from the one we were just discussing on North Main Street.
Surely it was at one time a showy house with proud owners who sat on the porch?
The newspaper reported that the fire department had to put out a fire inside the house a few days ago.  Suspecting that a fire may lead to a tear-down, I drove by and snapped a memory picture.  Here it … (7 comments)

old houses: It's gone. Sears Roebuck Searcy AR house is gone. Lightle house? - 01/06/13 01:46 AM
I drove by and the wrecker was there.
The bright light on the right seems to indicate a new dawning for the lot but for the house not!

Today I read in the newspaper that it is gone, torn down, an empty lot.  It really was in bad shape and probably couldn't be saved.  I did a blog on it once.
Sears Roebuck Houses in Searcy AR.
Our historical oracle, Dorothy Warden, called it the Lightle family house in her Local Views column.  She said she had promised to sit on the doorstep and protest the tear down but they … (21 comments)

old houses: The way things used to be. Dog Run. Old house. W. A. Cross family - 11/27/12 04:32 AM

This picture hangs in my office.  I never knew the people.  I do know their name because it was written on the back of the picture.  Rev. W. A. Cross, Center Texas, March 12, 1955.
But you'll agree that it is a step back in time.  The unpainted frame house with a dog run, tin roof and chimney on one end and a yard with a fence and gate to keep the animals out are so authentic looking.  The Reverend is stern looking but his wife stands beside him to keep him in order and his cap hangs on the … (25 comments)

old houses: Across the street from the Dictionary House in Searcy AR. Duncan's Used Cars. - 11/19/12 06:08 AM
We've had quite a conversation about the Dictionary House on East Park Avenue and how the house housed the Words, who invited folks to come up and explore words in the dictionary.
Across the street was the first V. W. Duncan used car lot.  He'd opened up, built a little office and was very proud. Several pictures were made, including the one that accidently took a picture of the Dictionary house.
Here are two others taken on that day.  V. W. and Wyndelene Duncan.

There was a really big house beside this little car lot building.  Perhaps the … (13 comments)

old houses: An old antique flue cover. Discovered in foreclosure property. Collectible? - 09/15/12 06:37 AM
The colors were so vivid!
It was like a splash of loveliness in a once fashionable house in the country.
If you buy the house, it will come with it but I took a quick picture. Note the reflection because the color and shine were still present.

It is, of course, a flue cover.  The folks with me told me that it was quite common to have a very colorful flue cover to cover that ugly hole that was left when the stove might be removed for the summer months.  He said some were quite large and there was a … (14 comments)
