The Schertz-Cibolo real estate market has fared pretty well during the economic downturn, even better than the rest of San Antonio. Homes continue to sell, including new home inventories. Nearby employers include Randolph AFB, located in nearby Universal City, and Fort Sam Houston and Brooke Army Medical Center. And now there is some more good news for the northeast part of San Antonio, just outside of Bexar County.
The giant food-product distributor Sysco is purchasing land to build a new 600,000-SF distribution facility off in Schertz, moving its Round Rock and San Antonio locations there upon completion. Construction is estimated to take two years. Sysco’s plans include expanding its service area throughout South Texas, as well as adding some 6,000 more products to its line.
Sysco, headquartered in Houston, is the largest distributor of food products, industrial kitchen equipment and supplies, and serving items in North America. Its customers include restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, colleges, movie theaters, summer camps, hotels, industrial caterers, and amusement parks.
The new facility will be constructed on IH 35 North, the main corridor connecting San Antonio to Austin, so many of Sysco’s 343 employees at the Round Rock location will likely start relocating in the next couple of years.
Schertz appeared on Money magazine’s list of best places to live in 2009. In 2008, Round Rock was seventh on that list, so relocating Sysco employees will not be unfamiliar with the concept of living in a great small town.
