5 Twitter Basics for Real Estate

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Fathom Realty

Follow Me On TwitterI’m one of those jump right in kinda’ guys… no sticking my toe in to see what’s happening for me! But when I first started communicating and networking on Twitter, I have to admit it wasn’t making much sense.  I kept doing it, but I just wasn’t “Feeling” it.

Since then, I’ve learned 5 Things About Twitter that made it easier for me!

#’s are your friend. Hashtags, those # marks, are one of the ways to search for information on Twitter. So #Dallas… or #Cardinals… you can even put the Hashtag and the word or term in your Google “search” bar and come up with real time results! (#FF shows up every Friday – it’s a list of people you might want to follow!)

U Dont Have 2 Use All Ur Vowels In Twitter World it’s perfectly acceptable to misspell words.  You only have 140 characters for your whole idea – so this can B helpful!

Twitter doesn’t make any sense to most people unless you “LOOK AT IT” with another tool. I like to use HootSuite (which is free) but a ton of my friends also us Seesmic and TweetDeck.  There are probably more than 50 good platforms for looking at Twitter on your Laptop or Mobile Device.  Here’s what My Hootsuite screen shot shows today.

HootSuite makes it Easier

With this screen shot, you can see the left column is my NewsFeed (like Facebook) and I can have a HUGE number of columns to the right.  The one with the red arrow is pointing to #RETSO (a Real Estate Technology event that I hope to go to this spring).

You can put people you want to follow into lists. Just like Facebook, you can organize the people you follow into lists.  You can ALSO follow a list!

Checking in on Four Square will send a notification to Twitter (if that’s how you have it set up)…ditto with your blog posts, and your LinkedIn Status updates… but you will not find many people FOLLOWING you, unless you actually join a conversation.  Twitter, just like ALL of the other Social Media Is A Cocktail Party.  If you are going to get anything out of it… you need to MINGLE!

If you have questions about building your real estate blog as you build your real estate business, give me a call!   Josh Harley, Fathom Realty, 214-228-0301. I’d love to help you, and learn more about what’s working in your market! Are you on Facebook and Twitter?  Let’s Connect!

Love the helpful hints.  I just began Twitter this week, took me a while to embrace this social media tool.  Like you, I have been looking for ways to improve and bingo your wonderful helpful post.  All the best for 2011 and who knows, our paths may cross on a transaction.

Joshua, thanks for the helpful tips. I like Twitter but don't use it that much. Used to.

I like your analogy to a cocktail party. I post, but do not mingle. I guess I should try to mingle.

Josh - good post - #agentrb and #raincamp tags are fun to watch on event days - I usually pick up several good points and follow a few new people who are tweeting good stuff - it is like "virtually attending"

What do you think is the best way to maximize Twitter?  This is what I have so far.  http://twitter.com/atthebeachteam#

I'm wondering is how to make it interesting and not just a look at my listings (not too interesting) roll?

I would ask the same question of Facebook.  Here is what I have with regard to it: http://www.facebook.com/pages/At-The-Beach-Team/161122900600389?v=wall

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I love Twitter because of its ability to reach a large group of people with one broadcasted message. However, this all depends on how many followers you have. There's still a lot to grasp with this Twitter phenomenon.
