Google Changes Algorithm for Site Ranking. What Does This Mean To You?

Google.Algorithms. Gadgets. MetaTags. ReBlogging.

OK, my head just exploded. This really is a well written post, but like some others said, we now have more to learn than when we started reading. Why. Why. Why.

I love the question about copy on the web from MLS listings. That should be interesting.

Original content by Leslie Ebersole

In Google, Gadets and SEO Matt Honeycutt writes about the new algorithm that Google will use to rank websites and blogs.

"My post mentioned that we're evaluating multiple changes that should help drive spam levels even lower, including one change that primarily affects sites that copy others' content and sites with low levels of original content. That change was approved at our weekly quality launch meeting last Thursday and launched earlier this week. Google changed its algorithm which basically targets "content farm" sites (sites that aggregate content from around the Web and do certain things to out-rank sites that have the original content). The upside to this ranking algorithm change: folks who focus on consistently creating original, relevant content should continue to rise in Google page one rankings.

People who create original content should create higher rankings that those who simply use the content of others.

There are other implications to think about, though.

Reblogging: Does this mean that if you allow another blogger to reblog or republish your material (eg in a "blog buddy" relationship), is it possible that the reblogger would get the SEO juice if that blogger has more authority? Should each post have a nofollow meta tag in it to protect the original author?

Where to publish: if you run a blog outside of Active Rain, should you publish first on that site and put in a "no follow" in order to make sure that your site receives the juice?

From Google webmaster guidlines under Duplicate content :

"Syndicate carefully: If you syndicate your content on other sites, Google will always show the version we think is most appropriate for users in each given search, which may or may not be the version you'd prefer. However, it is helpful to ensure that each site on which your content is syndicated includes a link back to your original article. You can also ask those who use your syndicated material to use the noindex meta tag to prevent search engines from indexing their version of the content. "

Also from webmaster guidelines Meta tags:

To entirely prevent a page's contents from being listed in the Google web index even if other sites link to it, use a noindex meta tag. As long as Googlebot fetches the page, it will see the noindex meta tag and prevent that page from showing up in the web index.

Listings: This has implications for real estate listings. If the listing is published first in the mls, it might not matter that is your featured listing spinning away on yoru site. It might be a good idea to publish that listing on your site with different content, maybe neighborhood information or a video clip. I could do this with the plug in for IDX Solutions or Realbird, I am sure there are other tools that would work.

Does probably means that you do not want to create original content about listings on Zillow, Trulia or Realtor.com....have to think about that.

You lost me on the Meta Tags, and how do they work?

Your article is actually good new for me, since I like to originate my work.  Great information, thank you!

Google is bowing down to (or more likely accepting huge chunks of money from) Old Media.   What Matt Cutts is saying:

"We are going to move Posts from New York Times, USA Today, NBC - CNN - ABC - CBS and NPR, etc. to the Top of our Search Results."

New Media including Drudge Report, TechCrunch, Amplify, Digg, Delicious, Reddit, etc. will fall in Google Search Results Pages to pages 4 or 5.

Again, thank you Jon for assisting with my explosion.

Just when you think you've got a handle on this stuff something like this happens.

Here we go again!

Gotta bookmark this and forward it to some of my friends and then wait for the smoke to clear!

Thank you for reblogging this post. Clearly, I am no expert so I learned a lot in the comment thread. Hope you did, too.

Thanks Jon for this post.  I need to come back again and read it when its earlier in the day.  We can put up good information, helpful information, even from time to time essential information for colleagues and clients, but it Google doesn't see it (rank it, give us credit for it) THEN a lot of those we're trying to reach won't see either. I'll come back to this post tomorrow.
