Are you downsizing? Maybe not this far!

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Gold, Fair Oaks

In these economic times, many people are downsizing and buying smaller homes.  Some empty nesters are even leaving single family residences and moving into condos where the yard work can be done by the homeowners' associations and the smaller home is easier to maintain, financially and physically.

Others may be taking advantage of the low housing prices and the historically low interest rates - lowest since the 1950s - to move up to larger and more luxurious living spaces, knowing that sooner or later, prices will go up and they will have made a great long term investment.  Meanwhile they have a great home to enjoy.

Then there are some extremists, like this fellow who lives in New York and has what has to be the smallest apartment in the country - 78 square feet!

.
.

I don't think I could spend much time in there.  I tend to be a bit claustrophobic.  I'd have to leave the door open, and I doubt if that would work in any big city. If you are looking for a home, large or small, give me a call - we have all sizes (though maybe not quite this small).

I remember seeing this once Susan. Definitely less is more but 78 sq ft??? Wow dinky. Can't beat it at $100 a month in Manhattan though. Does anyone ever visit?

Susan,

Absolutley priceless!  I can't even imagine it, but that's because in the south we like BIG.  Well, that and the husband, three kids and a dog, would make 78 sq feet tough.

I have found that a lot of folks who say they want to downsize end up in bigger places:-)

All the best, Michelle

Gary - I wondered the same thing.  He has friends, and he is a young guy who just might want to entertain a date, I would think.

Michelle - It's like the folks who want at least one fireplace and no pool.  Then after they've been looking for awhile, they fall in love with a house with a pool and no fireplaces.  When you find your new home, I think you just know it - it feels right and it doesn't matter what your preconceptions were.

I cannot see myself living in a space that small, hence I do not live in New York and do not want to live in any big city.  When I see people paying 500K for a shack in the big city I want to tell them - Come to Brentwood and I will get you 4000 SF on a huge lot with a pool.  And you know some people do.  We get lots of SF police officers and fire fighters that buy here and commute.

Good job making your point in an entertaining manner - and you're right housing needs and requirments come in all forms and sizes.

I too would be claustrophobic in that space!

Susan-Probably very little chance of this guy becoming a hoarder, or having hundreds of cats or dogs. Like he said, he stayed in Kenya in a mud hut smaller than his place in NYC. So he did move on up.

Susan - LOL at William's comment above.  I remember 20yrs ago after my divorce to hubby #1 and all I could afford was a small 550sq ft loft in Hollywood.  My front room (where my murphy bed was) was ok but my kitchen and bathroom were miniature and that got to me after awhile, that and I had no closets - at all!  I only lived there for about nine months before I found something a little bigger (650sq ft) where the bath and kitchen weren't on the same wall and I had a closet.  LOL

Hubby and I talk about being able to afford to sell our current home and downsize to something smaller and we both agree that the minimum amount of space we would need would be 1,200sq ft., which is less than half of our current home.
